SWARTHMORE, PA- Rachel Cook scored a career-high 16 points, and was joined by three teammates in double figures, to help lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 72-64 victory on the road at Swarthmore. After starting the season 3-8 overall and 1-4 in Centennial Conference play, the Blue Jays have reeled off five wins in their last six games to improve to 8-9 on the season and 6-5 in conference action. The Garnet drop to 3-16 in 2015-16, including 2-11 in CC play.
After starting the game slow and trailing 14-10 following the opening quarter of play, Hopkins dominated the second quarter 21-10 to take a seven point lead at halftime. Lexie Scholtz scored six of her 10 points in the second frame, while Beatriz Williams and Caroline Corcoran each added four.
Although the Blue Jays led by as many as 12 in the third quarter, a late run from the Garnet kept the JHU lead at seven heading into the final period. Cook scored seven of her team-best 16 in the frame, while her classmate Corcoran tallied five.
Hopkins used an 11-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to put the game away at 66-48 with just 2:12 remaining. Scholtz scored four points during the run, including a dagger three-pointer from the top of the key as the shot clock was winding down. The triple extended the Jays' lead to 14 with less than four minutes on the clock.
Williams (12 points) and Corcoran (11 points) joined Cook and Scholtz in double figures on the afternoon. Williams has now scored at least 10 points in four of her last five games.
Jessica Jowdy, who entered the contest as the second-leading scorer in the Centennial Conference, collected game-highs in points (24) and rebounds (11) to lead Swarthmore. Jowdy's scoring did not come easy, however, as the JHU defense forced her to shoot just 8-28 from the field.
Hopkins will be back in action Tuesday night at home, when it hosts Gettysburg at 6:00pm in Goldfarb Gymnasium. The Blue Jays and Bullets met earlier this season, in each team's CC opener, a 45-43 Johns Hopkins victory.
