• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Randolph-Macon Friday in Goldfarb Gym. Elizabeth Wuerstle led the team with 17 kills, while Kristi Rhead took over setting duties and recorded 43 assists.
How it Happened
• The first set the tone for the entire match - an even, challenging fight. The Blue Jays ultimately earned a 25-21 win in the opening set, scoring five of the final six points. Elizabeth Wuerstle and Erica Johnston came out strong in the match, each notching a service ace and tallying six and five kills, respectively. JHU held off a late run by Randolph-Macon, who tied the score five times, but never took the lead.
• The second set featured 14 ties, but this time the Yellow Jackets closed out the set on a 6-2 run to even the match 1-1. Johnston recorded five kills for the second set in a row, while Wuerstle and Sasha Gorelik added in three kills apiece. Kristi Rhead assisted all 13 Blue Jay kills in the set and added a solo block.
• Hopkins struggled in the third set, posting a 0.083 hitting percentage. Once again, Rhead distributed the ball offensively, assisting all 10 kills in the set. Randolph-Macon paced the set, going on a six-point run to gain a 15-10 lead in the middle of the set to pull away from the Blue Jays.
• The Blue Jays rallied on triple match point, with Gorelik earning the kill to tie the score 24-24 and force extra points. On the ensuing point, Gorelik and Louisa Kishton made the block to take the 25-24 lead, but RMC scored three in a row to win the set and match. Wuerstle led the Blue Jays in the final set with seven kills and a 0.462 hitting percentage, while five other JHU players tallied at least two kills. Esther Hong stepped up defensively with five digs in the final set.
