• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team shot 56.9 percent from the field en route to an 84-52 win over visiting McDaniel in both teams' Centennial Conference opener Tuesday night.

How it Happened
• With the game tied at 10, senior Nikhil Panu scored at the 12:21-mark to ignite a 13-2 run that spanned six and a half minutes. Graduate student Sam Gordon capped the run with a fast-break layup to give Hopkins a 23-12 lead.
• McDaniel got four straight free throws from Austin Cannon and Josh McWilliams to trim the deficit to seven with 5:02 to play in the half. Junior Kyle Doran answered with a pair of shots from the charity stripe, kick-starting a 12-2 spurt that saw the Blue Jays' lead grow to 17. Four different Jays scored during the run, which was punctuated by a three-point play from Gordon.
• Cannon sandwiched two buckets around a Michael Gardner jumper and JHU led 37-22 with 1:35 on the clock. Hopkins closed the half on a seven-point run with freshman Harry O'Neil hitting a pair of free throws, followed by a Ryan Curran tip-in and an Austin Vasiliadis three-pointer at the buzzer. The Blue Jays would take a 22-point lead into the half.
• Hopkins picked up right where it left off, with the first five points of the half to push out to a 27-point lead with 18:48 to go. Kevin Yrizarry ended a long scoreless drought, scoring a layup at the 17:20-mark to make it 49-24.
• Gardner answered with a layup on the other end to spark a quick 10-2 run as Hopkins took a 59-26 lead with 14:43 still to play. The teams traded buckets over a three-minute span and the Blue Jays led by 31. Hopkins put together another 10-2 run to push its lead to 41 at the 7:49-mark. McDaniel would chip away at the deficit, but could get no closer than 31 in the closing minutes.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins is now 83-77-1 all-time against McDaniel, snapping a two-game skid in the series. The Blue Jays are 50-26-1 at home against the Green Terror and 38-18 under head coach Bill Nelson.
• This is the Blue Jays' largest margin of victory in the series since an 86-54 win on January 22, 2000.
• Hopkins opens its Centennial Conference slate with a win for the 17th time in the 24-year history of the conference.

Inside the Box Score
• Curran led three Blue Jays in double figures with a season-high 16 points. He also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
• Gordon punched up 13 points, pulled six rebounds and had two steals while Gardner chipped in 10 points.
• Hopkins shot 59.6 percent from the field, marking the second time this season the Blue Jays have shot better than 50 percent. The Blue Jays also won the battle of the boards, 40-27.
• McWilliams was the only Green Terror player to finish in double digits, finishing with a game-high 17 points.
