• The Short Story: Sophomore Rory Cole scored a career-high 14 points as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Franklin & Marshall, 67-53, Wednesday in Goldfarb Gym.
How it Happened
• Hopkins scored two quick layups to open the game before Franklin & Marshall worked out to a 10-6, capitalizing on two trips to the free-throw line. The Blue Jays responded, outscoring the Diplomats 11-4 in the final 4:02 of the first quarter for a score of 17-14. Lillian Scott facilitated the game in the first quarter, feeding five assists and making one steal. Maggie Wodicka led the Blue Jays with five first-quarter points, including a three-pointer.
• The Diplomats earned the advantage in the second quarter, knocking down consecutive three-pointers in the first 2:41 of the period. Franklin & Marshall gained a five-point lead twice in the quarter including with 0:37 remaining in the first half, but Hopkins scored three points to close the quarter, including a shot by Rachel Cook as time expired, to cut the Diplomat lead to 32-30 at the half.
• Cook led the Blue Jays at halftime, shooting 4-of-4 for eight points in the opening half. Eight JHU players scored at least one basket from the field in the first half, while Scott and Cook each grabbed three rebounds in the first half. Scott also dished out a career-high-tying six assists in the first half.
• The Blue Jays took control of the game in the third quarter, limiting the Diplomats to just six points in the period. Hopkins, found its offense with a quarter-high 23 points, including three layups in the first 1:57 by Rory Cole. Lexie Scholtz also added three field goals to JHU's total and an assist on Varnado's three-pointer in the closing seconds, helping Hopkins to a 53-38 lead heading into the final quarter.
• Hopkins carried its momentum into the fourth quarter, gaining a 66-40 lead with 5:25 remaining in the game. Five different Blue Jays contributed to their fourth-quarter run, which was capped by a layup by Scott. The Diplomats countered with a run of their own, outscoring Hopkins 13-1 in the final 5:15 of the game for the final score of 67-53.
• Cole finished the game with a career-high 14 points, while Varnado added 11 points for the second straight game. Scott dished out a career-high seven assists. The Blue Jays shot 26-of-58 from the field, while the Diplomats hit 21-of-62.
