WESTMINSTER, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team's second-half comeback fell just short as the Blue Jays lost to the host McDaniel Green Terror, 60-50, on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays dropped their second straight as they fall to 10-11 overall and 7-7 in the conference, while the Green Terror win their second straight to move to 11-10 and 8-7.
Trailing by 13 with 13:00 to play in the second half, sophomore Jesse Flannery drained a three-pointer to spark a 13-2 run that made it a two-point game. Nick Yockey pushed the lead back to 13 at the 12:03-mark, but Flannery answered with his second three in a 56-second span. Sophomore Kyle Doran followed with another triple and the lead was just six with 11:02 to go. Both teams' offenses stalled from there, and the Blue Jays got a three-point play and a free throw from junior Ryan Curran in the ensuing six minutes as Hopkins made it a 41-39 game with 5:12 to go.
Kevin Yrizarry doubled the Green Terror's lead with a tip-in off a Josh McWilliams' miss. Curran answered on the other end for the Blue Jays with a bucket in the paint, but a Tim Stewart jumper put McDaniel back on top 45-41. Senior Sam Gordon once again made it a two-point game after sinking a pair of free throws. But the terror answered with seven unanswered points, capped by a Wes Brooks' three-point play to stake McDaniel to a 52-43 lead with 2:43 to go. Hopkins twice got within six in the final 2:28, but that's as close as the Jays could get.
Hopkins struck first as senior Matt Billups hit a pair of free throws and the teams went back-and-forth over the opening 8:27 of the game. The lead changed hands nine times as neither team take more than a two-point lead. Brooks gave the Green Terror the lead, as it turned out for good, with a triple with 11:33 to go in the half. It was his second of four first-half three-pointers. That ignited a 14-3 Green Terror run as the home team pushed out to a 10-point lead at the 7:09-mark of the first. The Blue Jays trimmed the deficit to seven, 23-16, with free throws from Doran and Billups. McDaniel came right back with a Stewart jumper and a fast-break layup by McWilliams to take an 11-point lead. The teams traded buckets over the final 4:31 of the half and the Terror led 31-22 at the break.
Gordon and Curran sandwiched baskets around a jumper from Stewart and it was 33-26 McDaniel just 63 seconds into the second. McDaniel answered with six straight points over the ensuing 4:49 to push its lead to 13.
Curran led the Blue Jays with 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. Billups finished with 10 points, a team-high seven boards, and three blocks. Doran also finished in double-figures with 10 points. Brooks scored a game-high 19 points for the Green Terror, with 14 of those coming in the first half. Stewart was the only other player to finish in double digits for McDaniel, as he just missed a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, February 13 as the Blue Jays host the 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall Diplomats. The game is the Blue Jays' 15th annual Wall-O'Mahony game as well as Senior Day. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 pm at Goldfarb Gym.
