Johns Hopkins Bests Navy, 14-8, in MAWPC Opener

? The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team treated a packed Newton White Aquatic Center to a 14-8 win over rival Navy in the inaugural game of the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference. The Blue Jays, playing at home for the first time this season, picked up its first win.

How it Happened
? Hopkins jumped on Navy early as sophomores Giorgio Cico and Andreas Katsis scored back-to-back goals just 59 seconds apart. Navy got on the board just seven seconds after Katsis' man-up goal to make it 2-1 with 4:55 to play in the opening quarter. The Blue Jays answered with a pair of 6-on-5 goals from senior Giovanni Cragnotti and Katsis to take a 4-1 lead. But the Mids would get one of their own with just eight ticks on the clock to make it a two-goal game at the break.
? The teams traded goals over the opening four minutes of the second and Hopkins led 6-4. The Blue Jays then strung together three straight to push their lead to five with 10 seconds remaining in the half. But once again, the Mids got a late goal and it was 9-5 Jays at the half.
? Navy struck first to start the third quarter, scoring just 32 seconds in on the man-up. But Hopkins came responded with four straight goals in a span of just 2:27 to go up 13-6 with 4:13 to go in the stanza. Freshman Carter Young got the run going with his only goal of the match at 6:40 before sophomore Josh Kurtz scored back-to-back goals. Senior Matt Fraser capped the spurt with a five-meter goal. Navy would once again have the final say of the quarter as the Mids scored with 2:07 to play to make it 13-7.
? The defenses and goalies took over in the fourth quarter as the two teams combined for just two goals. Cragnotti got his second of the night, scoring on a 6-on-5 just 45 seconds into the stanza. Navy would get the final goal of the match, on a five-meter shot, at the 1:33-mark.

What it Means
? Johns Hopkins is now 6-49 against Navy, including 5-6 in the last five seasons. The Blue Jays have won five straight against the Mids at home.
? Hopkins' won the first game of the new Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference, which gets into full swing this weekend. Hopkins, which is in the East Division of the MAWPC, will play a total of four league matches this weekend.

Inside the Box Score
? Sophomores Andreas Katsis and Josh Kurtz led all scorers with a career-high four goals each. Kurtz also handed out an assist to finish with five points, one shy of his career high. Katsis added three steals and a pair of ejections drawn.
? Sophomore Giorgio Cico totaled five points on the night, with a pair of goals and a team-high three helpers. His five points moved him into the top-25 in JHU history and he now ranks 24th with 124 points.
? Senior Matt Fraser led the team with seven steals while also drawing three ejections.
? Junior John Wilson made 16 saves and handed out a pair of assists to earn the win for the Blue Jays.
