Blue Jays Earn Comeback Win at Washington College, 62-61

The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team completed a come-from-behind 62-61 victory at Washington College Wednesday after trailing 31-26 at halftime. Sophomore Lexie Scholtz led the team with a career-high 16 points, while Madison McGrath added 13 points, including three three-pointers, in the Blue Jay win.

How it Happened
Madison McGrath knocked down a three-pointer to open the scoring before the Blue Jays suffered a 4:02 scoring drought and Washington College took the lead, 4-3. Lexie Scholtz scored back-to-back baskets to restore the Hopkins lead, 7-4 with 3:51 remaining in the first quarter. The teams played a back-and-forth game to close the quarter, with the Shorewomen converting 2-of-3 free throws for the final score of 13-13.
• The teams traded three-pointers in the opening minute of the second quarter, continuing in back-and-forth fashion in a quarter that featured three lead changes. Washington College worked out to a seven-point lead, 31-24, with 18 seconds remaining in the half as it pieced together an 8-4 run in the final 2:41. Marissa Varnado countered with a basket for the 31-26 score at the break.
• The Blue Jays chipped away at the WC lead out of halftime, as four different players scored for Hopkins in the first 4:30 of the third quarter, including three-point baskets from Scholtz and McGrath. With 4:47 remaining in the quarter, JHU gained the lead, 40-39, as Janay Smith recorded her second field goal in a span of 1:01. The Blue Jays tacked on to their lead with seven straight points before the Shorewomen knocked down four free throws for the 47-43 score after three quarters.
• Hopkins maintained its momentum in the fourth quarter, twice gaining a 10-point lead in the final frame. Caroline Corcoran sealed an 8-2 run to open the quarter with a pair of free throws, putting the Blue Jays ahead, 55-45, and Scholtz sunk a three-pointer to return the JHU lead to 10, 60-50, with 4:33 remaining in the game. The Shorewomen responded with an 11-0 run to gain the lead, 61-60, with 1:35 on the clock. Leading-scorer Scholtz scored a clutch basket with 33 seconds remaining for the final score of 62-61.
• Scholtz and McGrath each reached double-digits in points, while Smith and Rory Cole each contributed double-digit rebounds in the JHU victory. Hopkins shot 27-of-77 from the field and 6-of-23 from behind the three-point arc, and the Shorewomen posted similar percentages, shooting 21-of-60 from the field and 3-of-12 from three-point range.

Inside the Box Score
Lexie Scholtz scored a career-high 16 points in the win. She also led the team with five assists and three steals.
Rory Cole grabbed 14 rebounds in the game, while Janay Smith pulled down 13. Cole reached double-digits in the first half with 10 rebounds before halftime.
• In addition to Cole and Smith, six other Blue Jays recorded at least two rebounds as JHU outperformed Washington College 50-41 in the category.
• The Blue Jays did not give up any fast-break points to the Shorewomen. Hopkins tallied eight points off the fast break, including four as it outscored WC 21-12 in the third quarter.
• Hopkins took only four free throws in the game, shooting 2-of-4 from the charity stripe, while the Shorewomen earned 19 chances from the line, converting of 16-of-19 free throws in the game.

What it Means
• Johns Hopkins improves to 34-3 against Washington College all-time and has earned victories in each of the past eight meetings.
• This is the second one-point game between the teams, with the Shorewomen winning the other, 57-56, January 11, 2011. Hopkins is now 9-16 in one-point games all-time.
• Hopkins sits at .500 in the Centennial Conference with a 5-5 record.
