• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team fell, 58-44, at Ursinus Saturday. Sophomores Lexie Scholtz and Lillian Scott each recorded 10 points in the loss.
How it Happened
• The Bears jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first 3:11 of the game before a trip to the line by Lillian Scott earned the first point for Hopkins. The Blue Jays outscored Ursinus 9-2 in the final 3:15 of the first quarter as Caroline Corcoran drained her first three-pointer of the match and Scott and Rory Cole tallied a layup apiece in the final 1:59. Kenz Wilkinson knocked down a pair of free throws to cut JHU's deficit to 14-12 after one quarter. Janay Smith pulled down three rebounds while Lexie Scholtz made two steals in the opening quarter.
• Hopkins and Ursinus played a back-and-forth game to begin the second quarter as the Blue Jays tied it up 14-14 and 16-16 before the Bears pulled away to a 22-16 lead with 3:17 remaining in the first half. Maggie Spitzer scored her first points of the season as she made a couple of free throws with 3:06 left in the second quarter. Scott closed out the first half with a last-second layup to cut the Bears' lead to 23-20 at the break. Defensively, the Blue Jays limited Ursinus to nine points, as Cole grabbed three rebounds and blocked two shots in the quarter.
• Out of halftime, Corcoran drained her second three-pointer to tie the score 23-23 just 0:14 into the quarter. Ursinus responded, extending its lead to 29-23 with three field goals in a span of 1:40. Four Blue Jays produced points in the final 5:30 of the third quarter to cut the Ursinus lead to 35-32 with 1:07 on the clock, but the Bears notched two layups in 0:39 to earn a 39-32 lead going into the final quarter.
• Hopkins struggled to score to begin the fourth quarter as Ursinus gained a double-digit lead, 43-32, 2:07 into the final frame. A jumper from Scholtz stopped the bleeding for the Blue Jays, prompting a 7-1 run, capped by a three-pointer by Scott, to make the score 44-39 with 4:48 remaining in the game. The Bears knocked down nine free throws in the final 2:25 to seal their 58-44 victory.
