Feb. 4, 2017 LEXINGTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins wrestling team dropped a pair of Centennial Conference dual meets on Saturday as the Blue Jays fell to sixth-ranked Stevens (27-18) and host Washington & Lee (27-13). The Blue Jays end the regular season at 5-10 overall and 3-4 in the Centennial Conference.
Hopkins-Stevens: The Blue Jays gave the sixth-ranked Ducks all they could handle before falling 27-18. The Blue Jays grabbed a 3-0 lead on the strength of a 10-8 win by sophomore Ricky Cavallo over defending Centennial Conference champion and 2016 NCAA Regional runner-up Rob Murray at 125 and the match was tied 6-6 after three bouts when Lucas Escobar scored a 7-6 win over Dylan Van Sickell at 141.
The Ducks pushed out to a 16-6 advantage on the strength of technical fall wins at 149 and 157, but an 8-2 win by Dane Morgan at 165 and a 13-5 major decision victory by senior Jared Forman at 174 made it 16-13.
The three-point lead held for the Ducks through 197 after the teams traded technical falls at 184 and 197; Miles Gilliam drew the Blue Jays with 21-18 with an 18-0 victory over Gerad Ross at 197, but Pete Andrich's pin at 285 sealed the win for Stevens.
Hopkins-Washingotn & Lee: Cavallo opened with a forfeit victory, but the Generals won the next five bouts to grab a 21-6 lead. Included in those four wins were a tough 4-2 win for Michael Dik over Escorbar at 141 and a 3-2 decision for Zachary Papin over Tommy Grifa at 149.
Forman and Gilliam then sandwiched wins at 174 and 197 around a W&L victory at 184 to narrow the deficit to 24-13 before Matt Kaminer iced the victory by scoring a takedown in the final seconds against Hayden Good at 285.
Forman's win came via a 10-5 decision over Brandon Lefore, while Gilliam added his second bonus-point victory of the day with a 9-0 major decision of Zach Francis.
Inside the Box Scores: Forman's two wins on the day give him a team-best 20 victories on the season (20-12) • Cavallo's two victories improve his record to 9-2 on the year and he's won six straight • Morgan needs just one win to reach 25 in his career.
