• The Short Story: Lexie Scholtz fell just short of her second career triple-double as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team earned a key Centennial Conference victory over Haverford, 62-58, on Saturday afternoon at Goldfarb Gym.
How it Happened
• Two free throws by Scholtz at 5:51 sparked a 10-0 run to put Hopkins up 15-5. Samantha Wetzel stopped the Hopkins run with a jumper at 3:01 to make the score 15-7 but two free throws by Lillian Scott put the Blue Jays back up ten. The Fords went on a run of their own, scoring the quarters final six points to pull within four at 17-13.
• A layup by Katie Cook at 8:30 in the second tied the game at 17 but Madison McGrath put Johns Hopkins back on top with a three off a pass from Scholtz. Scott converted on a layup to increase the JHU lead to five but Wetzel hit a jumper to bring the Fords to within three at 22-19. Maggie Spitzer put the Blue Jays back up seven at 3:10 with a layup to make the score 30-23, but Cook responded once again with a three to pull the visitors to within four with 2:06 remaining in the half. Scholtz converted on a layup with 56 seconds remaining to put JHU up eight but Wetzel hit a jumper with 36 seconds left, as the teams headed into the halftime break with Johns Hopkins leading 34-28.
• Sierra Berkel started the third quarter with three straight layups to tie the game at 34, but Rory Cole stopped Berkel's scoring streak with a layup to put Hopkins back in front. A three from Sophia Way and a jumper from Scholtz once again gave the Blue Jays a seven-point lead at 5:24 before Megan Furch converted the layup to make the score 41-36. Back-to-back buckets from Scott put the Blue Jays back up by ten as Hopkins entered the final quarter with a 47-38 lead.
• Cole gave the Blue Jays their largest lead of the day with her layup at 8:31 to make the score 49-38, but the lead was short-lived as Haverford hit back-to-back threes and added a bucket by Wetzel to pull to within three with 7:21 remaining. Scholtz got the Blue Jays back up ten with a layup at 3:06 to make the score 58-48, but Haverford would not go away as the Fords scored seven straight points to get within three with 1:34 remaining. Scholtz hit a three to give JHU some breathing room with 45 seconds left, but Wetzel nailed a three to make it a three-point game with five seconds remaining. Scott would make one of two free throws to seal the game for Hopkins by a score of 62-58.
