The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 2-3 at the Philadelphia Invitational as the Blue Jays topped Haverford and Sacred Heart and fell to Penn, NYU and North Carolina.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays opened with an 18-9 win over Haverford with the Epee (8-1) and Sabre (6-3) teams leading the way. Tiger Gao and William Snyder both went 3-0 in Epee, while Sandy Vingoe was 3-0 in Sabre.
• Penn handed the Blue Jays their first loss of the day by a 20-7 score. The Epee squad dropped a tight 5-4 decision with Denis Routkevich scoring two of JHU's four wins.
• A tough 16-11 loss to NYU followed the Penn match. The Epee squad claimed a 6-3 win with Snyder and Matthias Philippine grabbing a pair of wins; two of the three losses by the Epee team came by 5-4 scores. Vingoe's two wins led the Sabre squad against the Violets.
• North Carolina's 15-12 win came on the strength of an 8-1 margin in the Sabrea. The Epee team grabbed a 7-2 win with Gao and Philippine both going 3-0.
• Hopkins closed the day with a 15-12 win over Sacred Heart. Routkevich (3-0) and Snyder (2-1) accounted for five of the six wins in a 6-3 win for the Epee team. A decisive 7-2 margin in Sabre - fueled by a 3-0 effort from freshman Vance Wood - helped secure the win for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays will return to action on February 10 as Hopkins will head south for the Duke Invitational.
