• The Short Story: The game would not be decided until the final seconds as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball fell just short of the upset of #16 Muhlenberg as the Mules escaped with a 64-59 win on Saturday afternoon.
How it Happened
• The Mules went on an 8-0 run to grab a 10-4 lead in the first quarter, however, Lexie Scholtz hit a jumper to bring Hopkins to within four, and Lillian Scott would drain a three to bring the Blue Jays to within one at 12-11. Brandi Valley put the Mules back up three with a layup but once again Scott brought JHU back to within one, this time with a layup. Two free-throws by Chelsea Gary at 2:45 put Muhlenberg up 16-13 but Sophia Way connected on a three to tie the game at 16. Scott followed with another three to give JHU the 19-16 lead, however Valley brought the Mules back to within one with two free-throws. JHU scored five of the quarter's last eight points as the Blue Jays ended the first 10 minutes of play leading 24-21.
• Muhlenberg tied the game at 26 with a three-pointer from Rachel Plotke, but Hopkins went on a 6-0 run to end the quarter and take a 39-32 lead into the halftime break.
• The Mules slowly chipped away at the JHU lead as Muhlenberg opened the third scoring the first four points. Way stopped the Mules' run with a three but back-to-back buckets from Plotke made the score 42-40 in favor of Johns Hopkins. Madison McGrath converted on the three-point play to Hopkins up five, but the Mules got the lead down to one with 4:58 remaining. A layup by Gary tied the game at 48 but McGrath hit a three with 36 seconds remaining to send JHU into the final quarter with a 51-48 advantage.
• Four-straight points by the Mules to open the fourth put them up 52-51 but a free throw from Scott tied the game at 52. Muhlenberg scored the next seven points to take a 59-52 advantage. Scott connected from deep and Scholtz hit a jumper to get Hopkins to within two at 59-57. Down three with 1:39 remaining, McGrath stole the ball and found a streaking Way who converted on the layup to make it a one-point game at 60-59, but the Mules would hold on to claim the 64-59 win.
What it Means
• The all-time series is now tied at 25 as the Mules have won the last eight meetings.
Inside the Box Score
• Way led with 16 points while Scott had 15 and Scholtz netted 10. This is the second game in a row in which the Blue Jays have had three players score in double-digits.
• Scott grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while Scholtz pulled down seven and Rory Cole pulled in five rebounds.
• Scholtz finished with a team-leading seven assists.
