Johns Hopkins Upends 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall

Younker Hands Out Career-Best Three Assists

The Basics
• Score: Johns Hopkins-4, #16 Franklin & Marshall-1
• Records: JHU (10-3-1, 4-2-0 CC) • FMC (10-2-2, 3-1-2 CC)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: For the second time this week, the Johns Hopkins men's soccer team erupted for four goals as the Blue Jays beat the 16th-ranked Franklin & Marshall Diplomats, 4-1, on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• The Blue Jays struck first, igniting a flurry of three goals in just 93 seconds. Junior Achim Younker got things going when he beat his defender to the ball, headed it down and then crossed it from the end line to senior Griffin Cyphers. Cyphers was all alone on the doorstep and tapped it in to put Hopkins on top in the 15th minute.
• Just 70 seconds later, Franklin & Marshall drew level. After a Diplomats' free kick from midway between the box and the corner flag, the ball ping-ponged around the Blue Jay box. The ball bounced to Alex Lalovic, who volleyed the ball to the right side of the box, where Ryan Corr one-timed it past sophomore Xander LeFevre.
• Twenty-three seconds later, the Blue Jays retook the lead on sophomore Alejandro Maclean's goal in the 16th minute. Senior Cole Rosenberger played a long ball over the defense to Maclean, who fired a shot from close range. Amoruso made the save, but couldn't control the ball and Maclean one-timed it into the net to make it 2-1.
• Hopkins pushed its lead to two in the 56th minute after another great hustle play from Younker. He battled his defender for the ball, beat him to the end line and then sent the ball across the face of the Diplomats' goal. That's where freshman Brian Lenzer ran in and volleyed it past Amoruso for his first career goal.
• The Blue Jays weren't done and added a fourth goal in the 73rd minute to secure the win. Younker settled a loose ball and dribbled about 10 yards before springing sophomore Pablo Martinez on a breakaway. Martinez ran onto the pass and scored on a low shot from the top of the box to stake Hopkins to a 4-1 lead.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 40-24-8 all-time against Franklin & Marshall and snaps a six-game winless streak (0-3-3) in the series. The Blue Jays earn their first win over the Diplomats since a 2-1 overtime decision on October 31, 2012. JHU's four goals are its most against F&M since a 6-0 win on November 6, 1999.
• The four goals are the most allowed by Franklin & Marshall since a 4-1 loss to Calvin on November 19, 2016.
• Hopkins moves into a tie for second in the Centennial Conference standings with 12 points and three games remaining.

Inside the Box Score
• Younker's three assists are a career-high and double his career total. His three assists are also one shy of the school record and are the most by a Blue Jay since Aerik Williams had three on October 14, 2000 in a 4-1 Blue Jays' win.
• Lenzer's goal was the first of his career and he is the 15th different player to score for the Blue Jays this season.
• LeFevre finished with six saves to earn the win for the Blue Jays. Amoruso made three for the Diplomats.
• Franklin & Marshall outshot Hopkins, 24-12, and had a 7-4 advantage in corners.

Up Next
• Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 17 as the Blue Jays make the short trip to McDaniel. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start at the Green Terror Soccer Complex.
