Scott and Scholtz Lead Hopkins Past FDU-Florham, 69-62

The Basics

• The Short Story: Lillian Scott scored 23 points while Lexie Scholtz added 20 as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team held off a late rally from FDU-Florham to take a 69-62 win on the road on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Hopkins trailed 5-2 early in the first before back-to-back buckets from Rory Cole and Lillian Scott gave the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead. A three from Madison McGrath put Johns Hopkins up 15-13 with 23 seconds remaining in the half, but Kayla Croswell hit two free throws with 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter to tie the game at 15.
• The Blue Jays opened the second quarter on a 7-4 run to take a 22-19 lead, however, a three from Madisyn Rosato tied the game once again. A three from McGrath at 6:04 sparked a 12-0 Blue Jay run over the next 3:04 which saw JHU take a 37-22 advantage. FDU outscored the Blue Jays 7-5 in the half's final 2:15 but the teams went into the break with Johns Hopkins holding a 42-29 lead.
• Two free throws by Croswell at 6:12 in the third cut the Blue Jay lead to nine at 47-35. A three from Lexie Scholtz put JHU back up by double-digits, 47-35 at the 5:48 mark. Back-to-back FDU baskets made the score 47-39 but JHU went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead 53-39. The Knights outscored Hopkins 4-2 in the quarter's final 1:13 to cut the Blue Jay lead to 57-46.
• A layup from Jennah Roman got the Knights back to within 10 at 4:53 in the fourth as her 17th point of the afternoon made the score 62-52. Back-to-back jumpers from FDU made the score 63-56 with 3:26 remaining in regulation, however, six straight points from Scott gave the Blue Jays a 69-56 lead with 1:49 remaining. FDU made a strong comeback attempt at the end, scoring the game's final six points, but Hopkins held on for the 69-62 win.

What it Means
• This was the second all-time meeting between the two teams. FDU won first meeting in 2007 by a score of 68-59.

Inside the Box Score
• Scott scored a team-high 23 points while Scholtz finished with 20. McGrath was the third Blue Jay in double-figures as she finished the contest with 10 points. Scott is just 28 points shy of 1,000 for her career and has posted seven double-figure scoring games this season while Scholtz has scored in double-figures in all but one game this season.
Diarra Oden led JHU with 10 rebounds while Scholtz finished with seven.
• Roman finished with 22 points for FDU.

• The Blue Jays open up 2019 with their final non-conference game as JHU will take on Marymount on January 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 pm.
