• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team faced a tough slate on Saturday at the Temple Open, taking on four top-10 opponents and a fifth that is receiving votes in the latest poll.

How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the day with a 16-11 loss to eighth-ranked Penn, with the Blue Jays grabbing a win in the Epee. Seniors Matthias Philippine and Denis Routkevitch and junior William Snyder won two bouts each to lead the Epee squad to the 6-3 win. Senior Ian Maddox, junior Solomon Polansky and sophomore Adam Katwan each earned a win in the Foil team's 6-3 loss. Senior Sandy Vingoe and junior Brian Huang won one bout each as the Sabre squad fell 7-2.
• The Blue Jays followed with a 17-10 win over the Stevens Ducks, with wins in the Foil (7-2) and Epee (6-3). Senior Jared LeBron went 3-0 to lead the Foil squad while Routkevitch and Philippine each won a pair to lead the Epeeists. Vingoe went unbeaten in the Sabre (3-0) as the squad lost a tough 5-4 battle.
• Hopkins then fell to fifth-ranked Princeton with the Epee squad picking up another close win. Five different Blue Jays earned a win in the Epee, with Philippine clinching the win in the final bout. Polansky and freshman Eashan Gupta won one bout each in a 7-2 loss for the Foilists. Huang and freshman Jake Desman also won one bout each for the Sabre squad (2-7).
• JHU lost in the fourth round to fifth-ranked Penn State, 23-4, with the Nittany Lions sweeping all three weapons. Katwan grabbed the Blue Jays' only win in the Foil and senior Lyle Poisson did the same for the Epee squad. In the Sabre, freshman Vance Wood picked up the team's only two wins.
• Hopkins ended the day with a tough 16-11 loss to eighth-ranked St. John's, with the Sabre squad picking up a 6-3 win. Vingoe led the Sabre squad as he went unbeaten with three wins. Gupta led the Foil squad with two wins in a tough 5-4 loss. And in the Epee, Routkevitch earned the Blue Jays' only win.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays finish the dual-meet portion of their season with 18 wins, their sixth straight season with 15 or more wins. This is the 12th time Hopkins has grabbed 15 or more wins under head coach Austin Young.
• Vingoe moves into 10th place in program history with 271 career wins, among all fencers. Among Sabrists, he ranks third.
• Routkevitch now ranks 28th, among all fencers, with 214 career wins and sixth among Epeeists.
