? The Short Story: Visiting 12th-ranked Northwestern scored the final four goals of the game to rally for an 11-10 win over the 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team Friday afternoon in Big Ten action.
How it Happened
? Freshman Aurora Cordingley scored her second of the afternoon to put JHU up three with 13:50 to play. Northwestern answered with a pair of goals in a span of just 13 seconds to pull back within one by the 12:51-mark. Megan Kinna sparked what proved to be a game-ending four goal-run when she took a pass from Sheila Nesselbush and scored from the doorstep at 13:04. The Wildcats won the ensuing draw and Shelby Fredericks found a cutting Nesselbush, who turned and fired to make it a 10-9 game.
? Danita Stroup then tied the game with her shot just inside the right post with 8:02 to play. Nesselbush capped the run with her third of the afternoon, when she moved off a pick and shot low to give Northwestern its first lead of the game with 2:22 remaining. Hopkins had a chance to pull even in the final minute but Julie Krupnick came up with the save on Mackenzie Heldberg's shot and the Wildcats ran out the clock.
? The Blue Jays jumped out to a two-goal lead with back-to-back goals by Heldberg in the opening 3:17 of the game. Jill Girardi and Holly Korn answered with goals in a 20-second span to knot the score at two just six minutes into the game.
? Hopkins retook the lead when sophomore Maggie Schneidereith took a pass from junior Miranda Ibello and beat Krupnick at 19:20. Less than three minutes later, senior Shannon Fitzgerald passed up a free position shot, instead finding an open Nicole DeMase. She took Fitzgerald's pass at the top of the fan and blew home a shot to make it 4-2 Blue Jays. Heldberg pushed the Jays' lead to three as she took the ball on a restart from behind the cage, dodged to the front and then turned and scored at 7:36.
? Just 36 seconds later, Nicole Beardsley made it a two-goal game when she scored on a low shot off the dodge. Girardi cut the deficit to one exactly three minutes later with a free position goal and Hopkins took a 5-4 lead into the half. Coming out of the half, Korn took a pass from Kinna, hitched several times and then beat junior Haley Crosson from the doorstep to tie the game at five.
? Schneidereith answered at the 24:57-mark to kick-start a 5-2 run that saw the Blue Jays go up 10-7. Heldberg followed with her fourth of the afternoon just over two minutes later and Hopkins led 7-5. Nesselbush and Korn then sandwiched goals around a Cordingley free position strike and it was 8-7 with 18:18 left.
? Senior CeCe Finney pushed the lead to two when she scored on the run off a nifty pass from Ibello at the 15:16-mark. Just 86 seconds later, the lead was three off Cordingley's second goal of the game. Schneidereith scooped up a loose ball and quickly found an open Cordingley, who beat Krupnick with a one-timer with the possession clock winding down.
What it Means
? Hopkins falls to 4-13 all-time against Northwestern with the last three meetings decided by just one goal each.
? Ibello's assist with 19:20 to play in the first was the 100th point of her career. She is the 22nd player in school Division I history to reach the mark and the third active player, joining Fitzgerald and senior Emily Kenul. Ibello needed just 44 career games to reach the milestone. Since the program moved to Division I in 1999, this is the sixth time that JHU has had three or more players on the same team with 100 career points.
? Freshman Shelby Harrison finished with three draws and now has 54 on the season. She is just two shy of tying the school record for draws by a freshman. Freshman Keegan Barger controlled four draws to bring her season total to 37, which ranks sixth among freshmen in school history.
