? The Short Story: Visiting Towson held off the Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team in a close 9-8 contest at Homewood Field Wednesday afternoon.
How it Happened
? Sophomore Mackenzie Heldberg pulled the Blue Jays within one with 1:24 to play when she dodged from behind and beat Kiley Keating on the doorstep. Junior Miranda Ibello then won the ensuing draw and the Blue Jays were looking for the equalizer, but a turnover gave the ball back to the Tigers with just 25 ticks remaining and they were able to hold on for the win.
? Hopkins jumped out to a two-goal lead with back-to-back strikes from sophomore Maggie Schneidereith and Heldberg in an 80-second span. Both scored on quick-stick shots from in-tight after some outstanding ball movement by the Blue Jays.
? Towson answered with goals from Carly Tellekamp and Gabby Cha to knot the score at the 17:42-mark. Schneidereith got her second of the afternoon when the Blue Jays cashed in on a Tiger turnover just 61 seconds later. The visitors were clearing and Keating carried the ball near the midfield line. Senior CeCe Finney checked the ball out of her stick and junior Nicole DeMase grabbed the ground ball and found Ibello going the other way. Ibello sent a long pass to Schneidereith, who was all alone by the Towson goal and scored easily.
? Annie Sachs answered with a goal in transition at 15:19 to make it a 3-3 game. She carried the ball into the offensive end and went to the cage where she scored on the run. Kaitlyn Montalbano followed with a left-handed shot in the slot to give Towson its first lead of the game with 12:53 to play in the half.
? Senior Shannon Fitzgerald pulled Hopkins level with Towson when she dodged the right alley and blew a shot past Keating from eight yards out at 7:20. Emily Gillingham responded 81 seconds later when she carried the ball behind the cage and then fired a low-to-high shot past junior Haley Crosson. Just over three minutes later, Cha scored off a feed from Montalbano to put Towson up 6-4 at the half.
? Ibello opened the second-half scoring when she ducked under the defense and scored on a side-arm shot from five yards out. Montalbano and DeMase then traded free position goals and Towson led 7-6 with 22:58 to play. Cha scored on a quick-stick shot off a pass from Shelby Stack to push the lead back to two at 19:14.
? Finney once again made it a one-goal game when she took a pass from freshman Aurora Cordingley and scored on the doorstep at 16:34. Natalie Sulmonte answered to put the Tigers back up by two at the 13:46-mark on a free position shot.
