? The Short Story: Seventh-ranked Navy used a pair of four-goal runs to take control of the game en route to a 16-9 win over the 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team Friday night in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
How it Happened
? Navy jumped out to a three-goal lead in the game's opening two minutes with goals from Julia Collins, Kelly Larkin and Jenna Collins. Senior Shannon Fitzgerald got Hopkins on the board at the 25:29-mark when she dodged the right alley and beat Ingrid Boyum on a high-to-low shot. Freshman Keegan Barger got it all going when she checked the ball away from Kayla Harris on the ride and sparked the Blue Jays' transition game.
? Andie O'Sullivan answered with a free position goal for the Mids to put them back up 4-1 with 19:39 to go in the half. Sophomore Mackenzie Heldberg then scored back-to-back goals in a 96-second span to pull the Blue Jays within one with 16:40 to go. Sophomore Maggie Schneidereith found her cutting in the right alley and Heldberg scored on the one-timer. She got her second when she took a pass from junior Miranda Ibello and scored from a tough angle to Boyum's left.
? Just over two minutes later, the lead was back to two when Harris scored on a one-timer off the Larkin feed. Fitzgerald responded with her second of the night as she dodged hard through the defense and scored on a high-to-low shot.
? Natalie Irwin scored on a free position shot at 9:19 to spark a four-goal Midshipmen run. After goals from Julia Collins and Nicole Victory, Irwin bookended the run with two minutes to play to send Navy into the half with a 9-4 lead.
? Hopkins struck quick to open the second half and cut the deficit to four. Heldberg dodged from the top and scored on a left-handed shot to complete her hat trick just 29 seconds into the second. Twenty-three seconds later, Julia Collins answered, sparking a four goal-run to push the Mids' lead to 13-5 with 24:48 left.
? Schneidereith ended the run with a free position goal at the 21:16-mark, but Navy answered with three straight goals to push its lead to 16-6. Schneidereith and Fitzgerald answered with back-to-back goals in a span of just 10 seconds as they cut the deficit to eight with 9:31 to play. Ibello scored an advantage goal at 2:50 when she took a pass from freshman Aurora Cordingley and scored on a sidearm shot on the run.
What it Means
? Tonight's game was the first-ever meeting between Hopkins and Navy. The Blue Jays are now 2-7 in the NCAA Division I Tournament.
? Heldberg reached the 40-goal mark for the season, becoming just the 10th different player in school Division I history to score 40 or more goals in a season. She ran her point-streak to 15 games and now has 34 points in her last eight games.
? With her goal at 21:16 in the second half, Schneidereith became the fourth active player to tally 100 career points. This is just the third time in school history that Hopkins has had four active players with 100 (or more) career points. The last time it happened was in the 2001 and 2002 seasons.
? Fitzgerald ends her career with 148 points on 113 goals and 35 assists, and 85 draws. She ranks ninth in school Division I history in goals, 12th in points, 17th in assists and 15th in draws. She finished with three goals for her 17th career hat trick.
? Harrison finished with four draws and had 91 on the season, the second most in school history. She already ranks 13th in school Division I history in career draws.
