Volleyball Sweeps Centennial Conference Matches

Hopkins won both matches in straight sets

BRYN MAWR

The Basics 
• Score: #16 Johns Hopkins – 3 • Bryn Mawr – 0 (25-7, 25-13, 25-12)
• Records: JHU (6-0, 1-0 CC) • Bryn Mawr (4-5, 0-1 CC)
• Location: Bryn Mawr, PA (Class of 1958 Gym)
• The Short Story: The 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins volleyball team opened up Centennial Conference play with a straight set victory over Bryn Mawr on the road on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

SET 1
•
The first set was all JHU as the Blue Jays jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead to force a Bryn Mawr timeout.
• Hopkins scored the next four points out of the break before a kill from Camille Baechler made the score 11-2.
• With Morgan Wu serving, JHU rattled off nine consecutive points to take a 21-3 lead.
• The Owls scored the next two points to make the score 21-5, but a kill from Simone Bliss ended the Bryn Mawr rally and made the score 22-5.
• A kill from Nicole Hada off a set from Esther Hong gave the Blue Jays the set at 25-7.

SET 2
•
The Owls opened set two with a 3-0 lead before a kill from Louisa Kishton got Johns Hopkins on the board. JHU proceeded to score the next two points to tie the set at three.
• With the set tied at four, Bryn Mawr scored three straight points to go ahead 7-4 before a kill from Bliss off a set from Kishton ended the Owls run.
• With the match once again tied, this time at seven, the Owls pulled ahead, however, Johns Hopkins rallied to tie the match at 10. JHU scored the next six points on the serve of Eleni Panagopoulos to pull ahead 16-10.
• The Owls would not be able to rally and a service ace from Kishton sealed the set two victory with a 25-13 score.

SET 3
•
Johns Hopkins scored nine of the sets first 11 points to take a 9-2 lead and force an Owls timeout.
• Hopkins continued to control the set out of the timeout, pulling ahead 14-5 off a kill from Panagopoulos.
• A kill from Micaelle Larrieux off a set from Hada gave the Blue Jays the 25-12 victory as Hopkins completed the three-set sweep.

What it Means
• The Blue Jays are now 24-2 all-time against the Owls and have won the last 20 meetings.
• Hopkins has not lost a set to Bryn Mawr since 2006.

Inside the Box Score
• Kishton recorded another double-double, finishing the match with 10 kills and 16 digs, both of which led the team.
• Bliss finished with eight kills and a hitting percentage of .350.
• Hada set a new career-high with 35 assists in the match.
• Hong added nine digs in the match while Sarah Khan finished with five.


URSINUS

The Basics 
• Score: Hopkins – 3, Ursinus – 0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-14)

• Location: Collegeville, PA (Helfferich Hall)
• The Short Story: The Blue Jays won their seventh straight match to open the season as Johns Hopkins defeated Ursinus in three sets on Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened

SET 1
•
JHU opened the match scoring the first six points, but the Bears rebounded scoring seven of the match's next eight points to put the teams tied at seven.
• Back-to-back kills from Kishton followed by back-to-back aces from Panagopoulos gave the Blue Jays a 14-9 advantage in the opening set.
• JHU scored the sets final three points to claim a 25-16 victory.

SET 2
•
Back-to-back kills from Emily Harris put Ursinus up 5-4 early in the set. JHU got even on a service error and took a 7-6 lead on kills from Bliss and Panagopoulos.
• The Bears came back to tie the set at seven, but JHU scored the next three points to pull ahead 10-7. Ursinus came back once again, scoring five straight points to take a 12-10 lead.
• Trailing 15-11 kills from Hada and Kishton made the score 15-13 as JHU then scored four of the next six points to tie the set at 17, and a kill from Bliss off a Hada set put JHU on top 18-17.
• The Blue Jays slowly pulled away and a kill from Panagopoulos sealed the 25-22 victory.

SET 3
•
Johns Hopkins opened the third set on a 6-0 run before Ursinus scored the next two to make the score 6-2.
• JHU then went on another run to pull ahead by a score of 15-7 and later an ace from Hada gave the Blue Jays a 10 point advantage at 20-10 as a kill from Lauren Anthony sealed the set and the match for the Blue Jays.

What it Means
• JHU improves to 27-0 against the Bears.
• With the two wins today, Hopkins has now won its last 24 Centennial Conference regular season matches. The Blue Jays last loss came on November 28, 2015, against McDaniel.

Inside the Box Score
•
Kishton notched her second double-double of the day, registering 13 kills and 14 digs.
• Hada led the team with 34 assists, one off her career-high which she set earlier in the day against Bryn Mawr.
• Bliss finished second on the team with 11 kills.

• The Blue Jays return to the court on Friday, September 21 as the team will take on Eastern at 7 pm.
