The Short Story: The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team topped Muhlenberg, 2-1, after an offensive push spearheaded by
Emily Maheras and
Carly Lupton-Smith in the final ten minutes of play.
How it Happened
• After 35 scoreless minutes, sophomore Cece Peden intercepted a pass just past midfield, starting a breakaway down the left sideline. Going stride for stride with a Blue Jay defender, Peden maneuvered her way to the top of the box, pulling the ball across the defender to open up her right foot and fire a shot into the rear post, giving Muhlenberg the 1-0 advantage.
• In the 68
th minute of play, Hopkins made an offensive run. From inside the box, senior
Maddy Rocks played a short ball to Maheras in front of the goal. Maheras snuck past her defender and fired a shot off the post. Despite multiple scoring opportunities throughout the second half, the Blue Jays remained scoreless until the final ten minutes of play.
• Dominating the possession, Maheras drew a foul in the 81
st minute to earn a free kick for Hopkins. Junior
Alexandra Damron played the ball into the box and senior
Carly Lupton-Smith flicked it into the back of the net for the equalizer.
• With just over a minute to play, Hopkins drew another foul. Freshman
Abigail Gerdes went down at the top of the box, giving the Blue Jays a penalty kick. Maheras stepped to the line and snuck one inside the left post to give the Blue Jays the 2-1 victory. The goal gave Maheras her team-leading ninth of the season.
