Blue Jays, Green Terror to Meet for 98th Time

The Game
«  Johns Hopkins (6-3, 5-3 Centennial) closes out 2019 regular season schedule as the Blue Jays make the short trip to Westminster, Maryland to take on rival McDaniel (3-6, 2-6 CC) for the 98th time.  Kickoff at Gill Stadium is set for 12 pm.

A Look Back
«  Johns Hopkins topped Juniata, 57-26, in its final regular season home game last Saturday.
«  McDaniel dropped a 49-7 decision at 19th-ranked Susquehanna last Saturday night in Selinsgrove, PA.

The Facts
«  This is the 135th season of Johns Hopkins football.  JHU first fielded a team in 1882.
«  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 561-487-58 (.533).
«  In this decade (since the start of the 2010 season), the Blue Jays are 98-17 (.852) overall and 81-8 (.910) in the Centennial Conference.
«  JHU owns 14 Centennial Conference titles (all won since 2002) and has qualified for the NCAA Playoffs 10 times (all since 2005).

Post-Season Talk
«  Johns Hopkins can officially lock up a berth in the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series with a win this week at McDaniel.
«  This would be the first time Johns Hopkins has participated in the Bowl Series.  The Centennial-MAC Bowl Series debuted in 2015 and to-date there have been nine games played.  The Centennial is 5-4 in those nine .
«  The Centennial-MAC Bowl games will be played at campus sites on November 23 with the following schedule (after teams from both leagues that qualify for the NCAA Playoffs are removed from the standings):

Seniors Closing Strong Careers
«  This week's game against McDaniel will be the final regular season game in the careers of the seniors on the 2019 Johns Hopkins football team. This year's senior class will go down as one of the most accomplished in program history.  Below is a look at some of their collective team achievements since arriving in 2016:

«  Johns Hopkins won three Centennial Conference titles and made three trips to the NCAA Playoffs during their career.

«  The Blue Jays are 38-8 since the current seniors arrived at Homewood.  Included in that record is a 34-5 regular season mark and a 21-3 record at Homewood Field 

«  The current seniors were part of four NCAA Playoff victories.  That's the second-most NCAA victories by any class in school history.

«  The 38 wins the current seniors have amassed are tied for the sixth-most in program history for any class.  They could become just the sixth class in school history to reach 40 wins during their career with two more wins.

November Reign
«  Johns Hopkins is regular season games played in the month of November this century, including 20-2 this decade (2010-).]
«  JHU had won 15 consecutive regular season games in November dating back to 2012 before falling at sixth-ranked Muhlenberg, 31-16, on November 2.

After the Bye
«  Dating back to 2011, when the Centennial Conference went to a league-wide bye in the middle of the season, Johns Hopkins is 39-3 in regular season games played after the bye week.
«  In games played after the bye since 2011, the Blue Jays are 18-2 in regular season games played on the road and 21-1 in regular season games played at home.

On This Date
«  This week's game will be the 18th the Blue Jays have played on this date - and the first since Hopkins topped McDaniel, 52-21, in 2013.
«  The Blue Jays are 9-7-1 all-time in games played on November 16 and have currently won three straight and six of their last seven games played on this date.

A Defensive Group
«  Through nine games, the Johns Hopkins defense is allowing just 18.7 points and 344.8 yards per game.
«  Johns Hopkins ranks third in the Centennial in scoring defense, fifth in total defense and first in passing defense (150.6).  For the record, the last time Johns Hopkins allowed 150 or fewer passing yards per game was 2011(141.2).
«  The opposition has completed just 47.9% of its passes against the Blue Jays (113-of-236) with eight touchdown passes against 11 interceptions.
«  JHU ranks 19th in the nation in pass efficiency defense (100.77 rating).

Getting On Track
«  The Johns Hopkins offense has scored 27 or more points six times this season, including efforts of 57 (Juniata) and 63 (Gettysburg) in their last two home games.  The Blue Jays are averaging 34.1 points per game, which ranks third in the Centennial Conference.
«  JHU punched up 550 yards in last week's win over Juniata - that is the second-highest single-game total of the season for the Blue Jays (682 vs. Gettysburg).
«  The 550-yard effort against Juniata marks the 36th time in school history that JHU has rolled up 550 or more yards of total offense in a game.  Of those 36, 31 of them have come since the start of the 2010 season.
«  Through nine games, Johns Hopkins ranks first in the Centennial in total offense (451.2) and first in passing offense (326.1).

60+
«  The 63-point showing in the recent 63-7 win against Gettysburg marked the 12th time in school history that Johns Hopkins has scored 60 or more points in a game.
«  Five of JHU's 60-point games have come since the start of the 2011 season and three have come since the start of the 2018 season. 

Tammaro in the Record Book
«  Senior QB David Tammaro was 25-of-32 for 298 yards with three touchdowns and also rushed for two touchdowns in last week's game against Juniata.  In the process, he broke two more school records.
«  Tammaro's 298-yard effort was his 32nd career 200-yard passing game, which moved him into sole possession of first place on JHU's career list.  He also broke Hewitt Tomlin's JHU record for career total offense as he now has 10, 732 (Tomlin's record was 10,677) and he needs just 199 yards to join Tomlin as the only 10,000-yard passers in school history.
«  In addition, with 69 rushing yards, he'll become the second player in CC history with 9,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards and with two more total touchdowns (rushing or passing), he'll become the second player in CC history to amass 100 career touchdowns.

Wellmann Ties JHU Record
«  Sophomore wide receiver Harrison Wellmann continues to pace the Blue Jays and the Centennial Conference in receiving as he has 62 receptions for 1,017 yards and 10 touchdowns.  He leads the league in receptions and receiving yards and is tied for the CC-lead in TD catches.
«  At 165.6 yards per game, Wellmann also leads the CC in all-purpose yards per game, while his 25.6 yards per kickoff return rank second. 
«  In the JHU record book, Wellmann's 62 receptions are tied for 15th on the single-season list, while his 1,017 yards rank seventh; his 10 TDs are tied for sixth-most in a season
«  Wellmann tied the Johns Hopkins and Centennial Conference single-game record for receptions in a game with 16 (for 189 yards and one touchdown) in the Blue Jays' recent game at sixth-ranked Muhlenberg.  This came one week after he earned Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors after he had nine receptions for 224 yards and two touchdowns in the 63-7 win against Gettysburg.
«  Wellmann enjoyed one of the finest games of his career in the win at Dickinson with 298 all-purpose yards, a kickoff return for a touchdown and a then career-high 142 receiving yards.
«  Wellmann's 95-yard kickoff return for a TD against the Red Devils is tied for the longest in school history and he returned three kickoffs on the day for 156 yards (52.0 yards/game).  He added eight receptions for 142 yards to ring up his 298-yard all-purpose performance.  For his efforts he was named the Centennial Conference Special Teams Player of the Week and his 298 all-purpose yards against Dickinson rank as the eighth-best total in school history.

Kalanik Reaches 25 Sacks, 50 TFLs
«  Senior defensive end Mike Kalanik enters this week's game with 50 tackles, including 15.5 for losses and 5.5 sacks.  He ranks fourth on the team in tackles and leads the team in TFLs and sacks.
«  Kalanik passed Brian Cook (2002-06) for first place on JHU's career sack list in last week's 57-26 win over Juniata with his 2.5 sacks against the Eagles.  Kalanik now has 28.5 career sacks, which tops the 28.0 Cook had during his career.
«  With his recent efforts, Kalanik now has 184 tackles, 28.5 sacks and 59.5 tackles for losses in his career.  Already the all-time leader in career TFLs at Johns Hopkins, he is the seventh Centennial Conference player since 2000 to reach 25 career sacks and the sixth CC player since 2000 to reach 50 career TFLs.  He ranks second among Centennial Conference players in career TFLs since the 2000 season.

Close Calls
«  Since the start of the 2013 season, Johns Hopkins has lost a total of 11 games.  Those 11 losses have come by a total of 56 points with setbacks by five, three, five, seven, four, three, two, eight, one, three and 15 points.  Translation, 10 of Johns Hopkins' 11 losses since the start of the 2013 season have come by a touchdown or less.  The 31-16 loss to Muhlenberg (November 2) marked the first time JHU has lost a regular season game by more than nine points in more than 10 years (2009 season opener at Delaware Valley).
