Blue Jays Fall In Road Opener At Mary Washington

JHU Will Return Home For Centennial Opener On Saturday

Fredericksburg, VA – Johns Hopkins dropped its second contest in a row on Wednesday night, falling to Mary Washington 70-51 in its first road game of the 2019-20 season.

After struggling offensively against the length of Messiah on Saturday, the offensive woes remained against the Eagles on Wednesday night. The Blue Jays scored just five second quarter points, allowing Mary Washington to build a 33-20 halftime lead, a lead they would expand on in the second half.

After a competitive first quarter, the Eagles took control in the second, holding Katherine Bixby's squad to just five points on two made field goals. Trailing 23-15, Emily Howie hit Jess Sweeney for a reverse layup. Howie hit a three-pointer 19 seconds seconds later to make it a 23-20 game with 7:08 remaining in the first half, but that was the final time JHU scored in the period. The Blue Jays went 0-7 from the field over the remaining seven minutes, allowing Mary Washington to go on a 10-0 run into halftime.

Johns Hopkins made just eight-of 28 shots in the first half, shooting two-of-ten from beyond the arc. The Eagles shot 11-23 in the first half, knocking down a pair of threes and shooting 9-10 from the charity stripe.

The Blue Jays were able to cut the deficit below double figures with 5:59 left in the third quarter following a pair of Erin Walsh free throws and an Emily Howie three-pointer. However, the Eagles responded with a 9-0 run to make it 48-31 after a pair of buckets from Maddie Shifflett late in the quarter.

The lead never shrunk below 17 for the Eagles in the fourth quarter, getting as high as 24 after a layup from Molly Sharman with 3:04 to play. Mary Washington matched its first half total with 11 made baskets in the second half while the Blue Jays shot 6-26.

Overall, the Blue Jays shot 26 percent from the floor in the contest, making just five-of-25 threes. Mary Washington hit 44 percent of its shots from the floor and matched the Blue Jay three-point total on 13 less attempts.

Walsh was a bright spot for Hopkins in the defeat, registering a career-best 13 points, while grabbing three rebounds and blocking three shots. Joining Walsh in double figures for the Blue Jays were Howie with 12 points and Diarra Oden with 10.

Shifflett led the Eagles with 17 points and seven rebounds. Sharman added 14 points on 5-12 shooting in the contest. Tory Martin and Emily Thompson joined Shifflett and Sharman in double figures with 13 and 10, respectively.
