The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins water polo team outscored Gannon, 10-3, in the second half to defeat the Knights, 17-13, Saturday afternoon at the Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Championships.

How it Happened
• Gannon took an early 2-0 lead but Hopkins responded with three straight and took a 3-2 lead on junior
John Murphy's goal at 3:48. The Knights came right back with a three-goal run of their own to go up 5-3 with 52 seconds remaining in the first. Sophomore
Emerson Sullivan scored to pull JHU within one, but a late exclusion goal gave Gannon a 6-4 lead at the break.

Jacob Whitaker sliced the deficit back to one. Gannon closed out the half with a 3-1 spurt to take a 10-7 lead into the lockerroom.
• Once again, Gannon scored the first goal of the quarter to extend its lead to four. Sophomore
Jayden Kunwar scored a five-meter goal at 5:49 to spark a five-goal Blue Jay run, in less than three and a half minutes, that gave Hopkins its first lead since early in the first quarter. The Knights scored with 56 ticks on the clock to knot the score at 12 after three quarters.
• Sullivan scored to open the fourth to put Hopkins back on top, 13-12. But Gannon answered just 29 seconds later to even the score. Shipstead scored a man-up goal at 4:52 to give the Blue Jay back the lead, for good it turned out. Hopkins scored the final four goals of the game to grab the win.  Â

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 14-0 all-time against Gannon. This was the first meeting between the two since 2017.
• The Blue Jays handed the Knights just their fourth loss of the season. Â

• Kunwar and Sullivan led the Blue Jays with four goals each, while Murphy and junior
Stephen Schmidt had four assists apiece.
• Shipstead added five points (3g, 2a), four drawn ejections and three blocks. Whitaker drew a seven ejections, blocked three shots and scored twice.
