Johns Hopkins Cruises to Win at New York University

The Basics

• The Short Story: In a meeting of top-10 teams, it was the top-ranked Johns Hopkins women's swimming team that prevailed in a 176-86 win at seventh-ranked NYU Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays won 12 of 14 events, broke five pool records and posted a pair of NCAA provisional times en route to the win.

• "The women were totally dominant! They swam with confidence and we think they are really starting to prove to themselves that when they put their head down and race hard, they are a real force to be reckoned with."
 
Top Finishers
• Hopkins kicked off the meet with first and third-place finishes in the 400 Medley Relay. Sophomore Sydney Okubo, senior Sonia Lin, sophomore Rebecca Ssengonzi and senior Kiki Petersen beat the field with a pool record and NCAA provisional time of 3:50.71. The team of freshmen Renee Liu and Kate Overbey, senior Michelle Wang and sophomore Kristen Alicea-Jorgensen finished in 4:00.07.
• Sophomore Elaine Lipkin followed with a win in the 1000 Free as she touched in 10:30.12 to break the pool record by more than six seconds.
• The Blue Jays then grabbed the top two spots and three of the top four in the 200 Free. Wang led the way as she clocked in at 1:53.83. Junior Emma McElrath followed in second place in 1:54.70 and junior Carmela Irato touched in 1:56.67.
• Freshman Cecilia Cortez and sophomore Sydney Okubo then tied for first in the 100 Back as they each touched in 51.71. Their times broke the pool record that had stood for nine years.
• Lin and freshman Cali Wilson then went two-three in the 100 Breast. Lin finished in 1:05.91 and Wilson touched in 1:10.30.
• Hopkins followed with a sweep of the top three spots in the 200 Fly, led by freshman Emerson Davis and her time of 2:07.83. Ssengonzi took second in 2:08.04, edging out Lipkin by just 0.14 seconds.
• The Blue Jays turned the same trick in the 50 Free, with Petersen grabbing the win in 23.72. Alicea-Jorgensen took second in 24.19 and junior Mikayla Bisignani followed in 24.50.
• Petersen grabbed her second straight win as she beat everyone to the wall in the 100 Free. She broke the pool record with a swim of 51.73. Sophomore Sophia Girgenti finished in third place with a time of 53.39.
• Hopkins once again took first and third, this time in the 200 Back. Liu clocked in at 2:04.70 to earn the win, with classmate Chase Lahr finishing in 2:10.01.
• Overbey and Okubo then took second and third, respectively, in the 200 Breast. Overbey touched the wall in 2:27.95 and Okubo touched in 2:29.69.
• McElrath picked up a win in the 500 Free as she finished in 5:08.85, edging NYU's Emma Monson by three-tenths of a second.
• Hopkins earned another one-two-three finish as Ssengonzi won the 100 Fly in 57.27. Cortez followed in 57.76 for second and Davis took third in 58.49.
• Wang took home her second individual win, beating the field by more than four seconds in the 200 IM. She finished in 2:05.40, a pool record and NCAA provisional time. Wilson finished in third place (2:12.30) and Lin placed fourth (2:14.13).
• The Blue Jays closed out the day the same way it began, with first and third-place finishes in a relay. Alicea-Jorgensen, Petersen, Liu and Girgenti grabbed the win with a time of 3:32.42. Junior Hanan Bandak, Bisignani, Lipkin and senior Alison Shapiro took third in 3:38.65.
