Women's Basketball Announces 2019-20 Captains

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins women's basketball coach Katherine Bixby announced today that senior guard Jess Sweeney and sophomore guard Diarra Oden have been selected as team captains for the 2019-2020 season.

Sweeney appeared 26 of the team's 28 games as a junior, averaging 11.2 minutes, 1.0 points and 1.6 rebounds per game for the Blue Jays. Handling a key role off the bench for the Blue Jays, she dished out 12 assists while nabbing six steals and blocking four shots on the year. Sweeney has played in 58 games during her Johns Hopkins career, averaging just under nine minutes per contest. The senior guard out of Natick, MA has been named to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll in 2017-18 and 2018-19.

Oden earns captain honors after a promising freshman campaign in 2018-19. She is the lone returning starter for Johns Hopkins after starting 20 of 28 games. Oden was fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 6.7 points per game and also grabbed 4.7 rebounds per game and was a constant pest on defense, registering 37 steals. The sophomore guard from Atlanta, GA scored a career-best 16 points on two separate occasions versus Swarthmore and Franklin & Marshall.

Hopkins will open its season on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. inside Goldfarb Gymnasium as they play host to York College.
