Johns Hopkins Powers Past Drexel, 17-9, in Season Opener

The Basics
• Score: #23 Johns Hopkins-17, Drexel-9
• Records: JHU (1-0) • DU (0-1)
• Location: Philadelphia, PA • Vidas Field
• The Short Story: The 23rd-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team got hat tricks from Ellie McNulty, Maggie Schneidereith and Keegan Barger en route to a 17-9 win over Drexel in both teams' season opener Sunday.

How it Happened
• Hopkins jumped out to a three-goal lead in a span of just 81 seconds. McNulty got things going after a Haley Crosson save, scoring off the dodge from the right alley at the 26:03-mark. Junior Mackenzie Heldberg then fed a cutting Aurora Cordingley, who scored from the doorstep on a one-timer at 25:14. Just 32 seconds later, McNulty had her second of the game and the Jays had a three-goal lead. Schneidereith drew a slide and then found McNulty open on her left for the score.
 • Colleen Grady got the Dragons on the board when she scored on a lefty side-arm shot at 23:59. Heldberg pushed the lead back to three when she dodged from behind the cage, spun on her defender and blew a shot top shelf. Drexel answered right back with a Cassidy Delaney low shot with 19:17 to go in the half.
• Senior Miranda Ibello responded with a transition goal to put the Blue Jays up 5-2. The teams would trade goals over the ensuing 12 minutes and it was 8-5 Hopkins at the 5:03-mark. JHU wasn't done yet however and as senior Morgayne Rix forced a turnover with 15 seconds to play. The Blue Jays quickly cleared and McNulty raced in for the score with 4.3 ticks on the clock to give Hopkins a 9-5 lead at the break
• Courtney Dietzel opened the second-half scoring and cut the lead to just three, but the Blue Jays answered with three goals in 68 seconds to push out to a 12-6 lead. The Dragons answered right back with back-to-back goals, in a 27-second span, and just like that the lead was four. It was all Hopkins however over the final 12 minutes as the Blue Jays outscored the home team 5-1 to grab the 17-9 win.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 5-0 all-time against Drexel, including 2-0 in Philadelphia. The Blue Jays' 17 goals are their most in the series since they beat the Dragons, 21-8, on April 10, 1999.
• JHU is now 19-7 in season openers under head coach Janine Tucker and 30-13-1 all-time.
• Harrison now ranks ninth in school Division I history with 97 career draws and Ibello moves into 16th with 124 career points.
