• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team went 1-4 against a tough field at the 2019 Temple Invitational Sunday, earning a 14-13 win over Stevens.

How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the day against 10th-ranked Penn, dropping a 16-11 decision. Freshman Eryk Kokosinski led the Sabre squad (3-6) with a pair of wins. Junior Adam Katwan did the same for the Foil squad (4-5). In the Epee (4-5), senior William Snyder won all three of his bouts.
• The Blue Jays followed with a hard-fought win over the Ducks and a win in the Sabre (6-3). Sophomore Vance Wood won his three bouts to lead the Sabre squad. Senior Solomon Polansky won two bouts for the Foil squad (4-5) and junior Tiger Gao did the same for the Epee squad (4-5).
• Hopkins then fell to fourth-ranked Penn State as the Nittany Lions swept the weapons. Kokosinski led the Sabre squad (3-6) with a pair of wins. Polansky picked up the Jays lone win in the Foil, while Gao and Snyder each won a bout for the Epee squad.
• JHU lost to fifth-ranked Princeton, with the Tigers winning all three weapons. Senior Brian Huang won two bouts in a tough 5-4 loss for the Sabre squad. Katwan won two of his bouts for the Foil squad (3-6) while Snyder won all three of his for the Epee squad (3-6).
• Hopkins closed out the day with a loss to St. John's, which is receiving votes in the coaches' poll. Katwan won his three bouts to lead the Foil squad to a 6-3 win. Kokosinski and freshman Paul Lam each won a bout for the Sabre squad (2-7). Gao and Snyder did the same for the Epee squad (7-2).

What it Means
• Gao is now tied for seventh in school history with 205 career Epee wins, while Snyder ranks 12th with 164 career wins.
• Polansky needs just four wins to earn the 200th of his career and he ranks 15th in school history in career Foil wins.
