10-1 run Lifts Johns Hopkins Past Mount St. Mary's, 11-4

Pietramala Earns 200th Win at Johns Hopkins

BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team used a 10-1 run that bridged the first and third quarters to turn an early 2-0 deficit into a 10-3 lead and fuel an 11-4 win over visiting Mount St. Mary's at Homewood Field Tuesday night.  The win improves the Blue Jays' record to 3-3, while the Mountaineers had a three-game winning streak snapped and slip to 3-5.

The win is also the 200th for Dave Pietramala as the head coach at Johns Hopkins.  Pietramala, who becomes the 17th Division I coach in history to win 200 or more games at one school, improved to 200-84 in 19 seasons at Johns Hopkins.  He is also now 223-101 overall.

After Mount St. Mary's jumped to the early 2-0 lead on back-to-back goals in a 55-second span from Luke Frankeny and Brendan Doyle midway through the first quarter, the Blue Jays methodically pieced together the 10-1 run from late in the first quarter through the end of the third.

The first of freshman Joey Epstein's three goals came with just seven seconds left in the first quarter and ignited a 6-0 spurt for the Blue Jays that gave them a 6-2 lead late in the second quarter.

In addition to Epstein's second of the night, the Blue Jays got second-quarter goals from Brett Baskin, Jack Keogh, Luke Shilling and Alex Concannon to grab the lead for good.  The Shilling and Concannon goals came just 31 seconds apart late in the period and both were extra-man strikes.

Mount St. Mary's got one back with just one second left in the second period when Brenden McCarthy bounced one home through traffic to make it a 6-3 game at the half.

Any hopes for a Mountaineer comeback were dashed in the first two minutes of the third quarter as the Blue Jays scored three times in the first 108 seconds of the second half to effectively put the game away.

Junior Forry Smith opened the three-goal spree when he scored off an ally dodge just 21 seconds into half and Epstein's second career hat trick was complete seven seconds later when he fired one home from the wing off the ensuing faceoff.  Senior co-captain Danny Jones capped the surge with his first career goal with 13:12 left in the period.

Concannon and Baskin would bookend Chris DiPretoro's last goal for the Mount over the final 25 minutes of the game to account for the final scoring.  DiPretoro entered the game with 16 goals in seven games, but was held to just the one goal on eight shots.

Epstein led the Blue Jays with the three goals and one assist, while Concannon and Baskin added the two goals apiece.  Sophomore goalie Ryan Darby played 57:39 in goal for the Blue Jays and posted 12 saves while allowing just the four goals, while classmate Kyle Prouty won 11-of-12 faceoffs and added four ground balls and one assist.

Mount St. Mary's did not have a player with a multi-point game, but was led by sophomore goalie Dylan Furnback's 14-save effort.  The Mountaineers were 0-for-4 on extra-man and won just 5-of-17 faceoffs in the loss.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, March 16 when the Blue Jays host Delaware at 1 pm.

NotesEpstein has at least two points in all six games in his career • Senior Kyle Marr extended his point-scoring streak to 21 games with an assist, but did have his 19-game goal-scoring streak snapped • Keogh (1g, 1a) had the first multi-point game of his career • The Blue Jays are now 7-0 all-time against Mount St. Mary's and 7-1 all-time in games played on March 12.
