Strong Second Half Leads Johns Hopkins Past Hofstra, 15-11

The Basics
• Score: #17 Johns Hopkins-15, Hofstra-11
• Records: JHU (6-1) • HU (4-3)
• Location: Hempstead, NY • Shuart Stadium
• The Short Story: Juniors Mackenzie Heldberg and Maggie Schneidereith combined for seven goals and five assists to lead the 17th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team to a 15-11 win at Hofstra Saturday afternoon.

How it Happened
• Junior Becca Boyle put the Blue Jays on the board at the 21:23-mark when she took a pass from senior Miranda Ibello and scored from the middle of the fan while falling down. Just over two minutes later, Hopkins' lead was two on junior Lexi Souder's free position goal.
• Hofstra answered with four straight goals, in a span of less than seven minutes, to go up 4-2 with 9:28 to play in the half. Alyssa Parrella and Alex Mattera scored back-to-back free position goals at 16:08 and 14:54 to knot the score at two. Parrella dumped the ball to a cutting Tessa Sinatro, who turned and fired a shot to the bottom right corner to put the Pride up 3-2 at 11:41. Erin Demek then converted a free position shot to stake the home team to a two-goal lead.
• The Blue Jays capitalized on a turnover in transition to pull back within one with 3:53 to go in the half. Schneidereith found a cutting Auroroa Cordingley, who caught the ball in stride and beat Jess Smith over her left shoulder. Just a minute later, Cordingley checked the ball away from Annalise Martin, scooped up the ground ball and went all the way to the Hofstra cage for the score.
• The Pride had the final say of the half as Parrella picked up her second of the game to put her team up 5-4 with 35.9 ticks on the clock. She dodged from behind the cage and then scored on a right-handed sidearm shot.
• The Blue Jays opened the second with four straight goals to go up 8-5 just 7:20 in. Heldberg tied the game three minutes into the second with a highlight-reel behind-the-back goal. Sophomore Shelby Harrison and Cordingley followed with back-to-back free position goals and it was 7-5. Schneidereith capped the run when she dodged from right goal line extended and blew a shot past Smith on the run.
• Darcie Smith got the Pride on the board when she scored from in-tight at the 21:42-mark. Hopkins answered with goals from Heldberg and Ibello just 78 seconds apart to stake the Jays to a 10-6 lead. After being held off the board for nearly 12 minutes, Hofstra went on a 3-1 run to pull within two with 8:10 to play.
• Schneidereith responded with a pair of goals, less than two minutes apart, and just like that the lead was back to four at the 6:06-mark. Heldberg and Katie Whelan traded goals over the final five minutes and 20 seconds and Hopkins took home the 15-11 lead.
