Johns Hopkins Edges York, 2-1

The Basics
• Score: #5 Johns Hopkins-2, York-1
• Records: JHU (4-1-0) • YCP (2-1-2)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Homewood Field
• The Short Story: The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team beat visiting York, 2-1, on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Homewood Field.

How it Happened
• Hopkins nearly grabbed the early lead in the 23rd minute off the foot of junior Jonathon Brown, but Spartan goalie Billy Bridegum kicked the ball away to keep the game scoreless. Just three minutes later, the Blue Jays were the beneficiaries of an own goal as they took a 1-0 lead. Junior Liam Creedon took a corner kick for Hopkins and a York player headed the ball into his own net, just under the crossbar.
• In the 37th minute, freshman Axel Whamond nearly bent one inside the right post from the top of the box, but his shot just missed wide.
• The Blue Jays once again took advantage of an own goal, that made it a two-goal game, in the 63rd minute. Junior Nate Charendoff had a shot from close range that Bridegum stopped. He was unable to control the rebound and it went right back to Charendoff. He took one touch and then a Spartan defender kicked the ball away and inadvertently into his own goal.
• The Spartans cut the deficit in half, getting a lucky bounce of their own in the 69th minute. The Blue Jays attempted to clear the ball, but it ricocheted off the shin of a York player and right to Zion Friday. He settled the ball, turned and buried a shot to the lower left corner from about 20 yards out.
• Creedon just missed making it a two-goal game again in the 75th minute when his free kick just nicked the outside of the right post.
