The BasicsÂ
• Score: Johns Hopkins – 3 • Bryn Mawr - 0
• Records: Johns Hopkins (8-0) • Bryn Mawr (0-7)
• Location: Baltimore, MD • Goldfarb Gymnasium
• The Short Story: The Blue Jays returned to Goldfarb Gymnasium for the first time in 2019, cruising to a straight-set victory over Bryn Mawr in the first meeting of Centennial Conference opponents this season.
How it Happened
SET ONE
• Hopkins jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead, receiving kills from
Simone Bliss, Hannah Korslund and
Eleni Panagopoulos.
• The Owls were able to hang around early, cutting the Blue Jay lead to 9-5 following a Nicole Wood kill.
• That would be as close as the set would get, as Hopkins strung together 12 unanswered points with
Louisa Kishton at the service line. Four of the 12 points came on Kishton aces, and the Jays as a team notched a season-high 17 aces.
• One of Bliss' four first-set kills closed the opening set for Hopkins 25-8.
SET TWO
• Panagopoulos opened the second frame with a pair of kills, however Bryn Mawr would answer with three straight points to take their first and only lead of the evening.
•
Morgan Wu stepped to the service line with the score knotted at 3-3 and before you knew it, Hopkins had raced out to a 9-3 advantage. Wu tallied two of her game-high eight service aces during that rotation.
• Sophomore
Lauren Anthony served out the final nine points of the second set, capped by an ace to give Hopkins a 25-6 win.
SET THREE
• JHU opened the third set the same way as they started the second, with an
Eleni Panagopoulos kill. The sophomore middle blocker led the Jays with 12 kills on the night.
• Once again, Wu strung together a long service rotation to extend what was a 4-2 Hopkins lead at the time, to 15-2. She was credited with six aces on that service turn.
• A Korslund kill gave Hopkins match-point at 24-8, and Izzy Gerosa followed with an attacking error to move Johns Hopkins to 8-0 on the year.
What it Means
• Hopkins has won the last 21 matches against Bryn Mawr and has not dropped a set against the Owls since 2007.
• The Blue Jays have won their home opener each of the past nine seasons dating back to 2010.
Â
Inside the Box Score
• Korslund's ten kills on the night are a new career-high for the senior captain. She reached double-digit kills on just 12 attacks, good for a staggering .750 hitting percentage.
• It was the middle of the Johns Hopkins attack that was able to overpower the Bryn Mawr defense, with Panagopoulos leading the team with 12 kills on a .550 percentage and Anthony following with nine kills on 15 attacks, good for a .600 clip. Â
• Hopkins totaled 17 aces on the night, five shy of the program record.
Up Next
• Hopkins will again hit the road for three matches this weekend, this time traveling to Selinsgrove, Pa. for the Susquehanna Tournament. The jays will take on Clarkson Friday night at 6 p.m., before squaring off against RIT and Ithaca on Saturday.
