The Basics

• The Short Story: The offense erupted for the 22^nd-ranked Johns Hopkins men's soccer team in a 5-2 win over Washington & Lee in the first game of the Blue Jay Invitational Saturday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
• Hopkins struck early after junior Jonathon Brown earned a penalty kick for the Blue Jays. Junior Liam Creedon took the kick for JHU and converted to stake the home team to a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute.
• The Blue Jays doubled their lead in the 35^th minute with junior Ben Bae's goal. Sophomore Brian Lenzer sent a long ball to senior Achim Younker on the left endline. He collected the ball, took a step around his defender and centered the ball to Bae, who headed it over Generals' goalie Michal Nyc.
• Washington & Lee sliced the deficit in half with just 28 seconds to play in the first half. Jack Parham centered the ball to Harris Salom, who took one touch and then ripped a shot into the upper left corner from about 30 yards out.
• Freshman Axel Whamond pushed the lead back to two with his first career goal less than two minutes into the second half. Junior Alejandro Maclean dribbled into the Generals' offensive end, drew a double team and then slotted a pass to Whamond, who one-touched the ball inside the left post.
• Just 15 minutes later, Whamond had his second goal and the Blue Jays had a 4-1 lead. Creedon sent a long ball over the Generals' defense, down the right touchline. Brown ran onto the ball, centered it to Whamond, who finished from close range.
• Washington & Lee answered in the 70^th minute, to once again cut the deficit in half. Erik Recke threw the ball in from the right touchline to Mickey Kutsanzira, who touched it right back. Recke then crossed the ball into the Blue Jay box, where Harry Pinkerton headed it off the right post and in.
• In the 88^th minute, freshman Jason Werenski crossed the ball to junior Nate Charendoff, who split the defense with a pass to MacFarquahar. He ran onto the ball and slotted a low shot to the left corner in the 88^th minute to account for the 5-2 final.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 6-3-1 all-time against Washington & Lee and is unbeaten in the last three meetings. The two last met in the 2018 NCAA First Round, which JHU won in a shootout after playing a scoreless 100 minutes.
• The Generals had posted nine straight shutouts, dating back to October 15, 2018, entering today's contest. In fact, they had allowed just five goals in their last 16 games – combined. During that same stretch, Washington & Lee had posted 11 shutouts. The five goals allowed are also the most by Washington & Lee since a 5-4 loss at Emory on September 2, 2018.
• Hopkins' five goals are its most in a game since a 6-0 win at Ursinus on October 21, 2017. The seven combined goals are the most in a JHU game since a 4-3 win at Washington College on October 31, 2015.

• Hopkins edged Washington & Lee in shots (13-12) and corners (6-3).
• Whamond is the first Blue Jay with multiple goals in a game since Pablo Martinez scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Frostburg State on September 5, 2018. He is the first freshman to do so since Maclean accomplished the feat on October 2, 2017 versus Stevenson (3-0 win).
• Junior Xander LeFevre finished with three saves in the win, while Nyc also made three stops for the Generals.
