York Tops Hopkins, 31-13, in Non-Conference Wrestling Action

Paul Earns Team-Leading 20th Win of the Season

BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting York picked up two wins by fall and two by forfeit to fuel a 31-13 victory over host Johns Hopkins in non-conference wrestling action in Goldfarb Gymnasium Friday evening.  With the win, the Spartans improve to 6-6, while the Blue Jays slip to 2-4.

The Blue Jays led 3-0 after a 10-9 win for freshman Brent Lorin over Jared Kuhns at 125, but the Spartans took the lead for good as Blake Shalbert and Verlensky Joachim followed with second and first period pins, respectively to go up 12-6.

Johns Hopkins won three of the next four bouts with sophomore Jared Osborne edging Timmy Sparks, 5-3, at 149 to jump-start the rally.  After Eric Hutchinson's major decision win at 157 for the Spartans, 10th-ranked Dominick Reyes scored a 6-2 win over Jesse Rocco at 165 for the Blue Jays and sophomore Joe Paul added his team-leading 20th win of the year with an 11-1 major decision of Joey Bunce at 174 to pull Hopkins within 16-13.

Sophomore Billy Myers' 7-2 decision of Blue Jay senior Nathan Wertheimer at 184 was followed by the two forfeits to account for the 31-13 final score.

Notes of Interest
Reyes improved to 18-2 on the year and 70-24 in his career • The win by major decision was Paul's team-leading fifth of the year and 10 of his 20 wins this season have earned bonus points • Lorin's win by decision was his 11th victory of the year, but his first by regular decision as his other 10 wins include five pins, two majors, two forfeits and one technical fall • Osborne has won three straight and is 6-1 in his last seven matches – all six wins during his streak have been by three points or less and his only loss during that time came in overtime.

What's Next
Johns Hopkins will make a quick turnaround as the Blue Jays will travel to Penn Tech tomorrow to participate in the Mid-Winter Duals.  The Blue Jays are scheduled to take on Thaddeus Stevens, NYU, Hunter and host Penn Tech. The first match is scheduled to begin at 10 am.
