How it Happened
The Johns Hopkins men's basketball team's return to Goldfarb Gym was full of highlights as the 16th-ranked Blue Jays beat the Dickinson Red Devils, 78-62. The Blue Jays were coming off a 10-day layoff and it was their first home game in more than a month.
This one was close early as the teams traded blows in the opening five minutes. Trailing by three, senior Harry O'Neil hit a layup to spark a quick 6-0 spurt that put Hopkins up 12-9. Dickinson answered with a 7-2 run to take a 16-14 lead on a KJ Holton jumper at the 10:52-mark. Sophomore Tom Quarry grabbed the lead back for the Blue Jays with a three from the wing. That ignited a 16-2 run, with five different Blue Jays scoring, as they pushed out to a 30-18 lead with 3:08 to go in the half. The teams traded scores over the final three minutes and Hopkins took a 36-23 lead into the half.
Dickinson opened the second-half scoring with an Onye Okoro jumper. Quarry answered with a bucket in the paint to kick-start a 25-5 run that saw Hopkins' lead balloon to 31. Sophomore Braeden Johnson put the punctuation on the run with a fast-break dunk at the 12:26-mark to make it a 61-30 game. Dickinson kept battling and would outscore Hopkins, 32-17 over the final 12 minutes to make the final score closer than it was.
