The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team got goals from 13 players en route to a 19-8 win over visiting Furman Saturday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
Hopkins took advantage of early clearing problems by Furman, getting goals from seniors
Maggie Schneidereith and
Mackenzie Heldberg just 80 seconds apart. Kyra LaMotte cut the Blue Jays' lead in half with the left-handed bouncer off the dodge at the 21:43-mark. Junior
Keegan Barger answered for the Jays, scoring back-to-back goals in a 26-second span to put Hopkins up 4-1.
LaMotte again answered, scoring on a low shot off the dodge to cut the lead in half with 18:31 to play. Heldberg got her second of the afternoon, scoring on a one-timer on the doorstep to spark a nine-goal Hopkins' run that spanned just eight and a half minutes. Eight Blue Jays scored during the run, which was capped by an
Aurora Cordingley behind-the-back goal at 7:01. Grace Pollak ended the run with a shot on the run in the left alley to make it a 13-3 game at the half.
    Sophomore
Claire Mills opened the second-half scoring when Heldberg passed up a free position shot and instead found Mills open on the right post. A little over three minutes later, freshman
Maeve Barker took a pass from classmate
Bryce Pfundstein and scored her first career goal to stake Hopkins to a 15-3 lead. Leah Nonnenmann answered with a turn-and-shoot that sparked a 3-1 run for the Paladins and made it 16-6.
    Barker and sophomore
Rachel Scheinberg responded with goals less than three minutes apart to push the lead to 12 with 10:38 to play. Nonnenmann then sandwiched a pair of goals around a strike from Pfundstein to account for the 19-8 final. Â
