How it Happened
The Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season with a 13-11 come-from-behind win against Drexel Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays led for less than two minutes in the first 50 minutes of the game before rallying for the victory.
The Blue Jays trailed 10-8 after
Karson Harris struck for two goals in a span of 83 seconds early in the second half before starting their late-game rally with back-to-back goals from senior
Maggie Schneidereith and freshman
Carly Steinlauf just 57 seconds apart midway through the half.
The Dragons grabbed an 11-10 lead with 10:49 to play on another Harris goal – her fourth of the game – but the Blue Jays answered just 15 seconds later as junior
Aurora Cordingley picked the far post on the run to force the sixth and final tie of the game.
Both teams had chances over the next three minutes, but it was the Blue Jays who would grab the lead for good as Steinlauf bounced home a runner in transition off an assist from classmate
Madison McPherson with 6:41 to play.Â
A
Shelby Harrison goal off a nifty feed from
Mackezie Heldberg three minutes later gave the Blue Jays a 13-11 lead and the Blue Jay defense never let the Dragons get a shot off in the final three minutes to seal the win.
The Dragons had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, and later erased a 5-4 deficit with a three-goal run late in the half that gave them a 7-5 lead. Cordingley's second of the game made it 7-6 at the half and the Blue Jays had it tied at 8-8 after a Harrison free position goal with 22:16 remaining in regulation. That tie was short-live as Harris stuck her two goals shortly after to give Drexel the 10-8 lead that set the stage for the Blue Jays' 5-1 game-ending run.
