• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team earned wins over MIT and North Carolina and finished the day with a 2-3 record at the Duke Invitational Saturday.
 
How it Happened
• Hopkins opened against host and 10th-ranked Duke, falling 21-6. The Sabre squad dropped a tough 5-4 decision to the Blue Devils, with freshman Sachin Mehta winning two of his three bouts.
• JHU rebounded with a hard-fought 14-13 win over MIT with wins by the Sabre (5-4) and Epee (5-4) squads. Mehta and classmate David D3Scherer each won two bouts in the Sabre. Senior Tiger Gao and freshman Jeffrey Wang did the same in the Epee. The Foil squad lost a close 5-4 decision, with sophomore Evan Lau earning two wins.
• The Blue Jays followed up with another close win over the Tar Heels. The Epee squad grabbed a 6-3 win, behind a sweep by Wang (3-0). Mehta again won a pair of bouts as the Sabre squad fell 5-4. Lau and sophomore Noah Park each won two bouts but the Foil squad lost 5-4.
• Hopkins had its win streak stopped against fifth-ranked Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish swept all three weapons in the 26-1 win. Wang earned the lone Blue Jay win against the nine-time national champions.
• JHU wrapped up the day with an 18-9 loss to Brandeis. The Sabre squad lost a close one, 5-4, with DeScherer winning two of his three bouts. Junior Eashan Gupta also won twice but the Foil squad lost 6-3. And in the Epee, Gao accounted for both of the Blue Jays' wins.
