• Pitching Decision: W – Jaspar Carmichael (1-1) • L – Kevin Ledford (0-1)
• The Short Story: Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, the Blue Jays scored two runs despite not recording a hit to defeat Roanoke on Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
Johns Hopkins trailed Roanoke 3-2 entering the bottom half of the ninth inning before plating two runs to pick up a walk-off victory over the Maroons. Senior Chris Festa fell behind 1-2 in the count before taking three straight balls to earn a lead-off walk. AJ King was hit by a 1-1 pitch, putting two runners on with nobody out. The Roanoke bullpen remained empty, leaving the game firmly in the hands of closer Kevin Ledford. Austin Sacks got ahead 3-0 before drawing a 3-2 walk to load the bases.
Bob Babb called on Matthew Chang to replace King at second as the pinch runner with James Ingram due up. Ingram crushed a ball sky-high to the warning track in left, safely deep enough to tie the game with a sacrifice fly, but Hunter Andrews was unable to make the catch, allowing the winning run to move 90 feet closer. Ledford struck out Dillon Bowman, bringing Mike Ainsworth to the plate with two hits already in the game. Ledford hit the senior with a pitch, bringing home Chang to give JHU a walk-off 4-3 victory.
Roanoke jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring in the first, third and fourth innings. After a one-out walk and a wild pitch in the top of the first inning, freshman starter Jack McRae induced a ground ball to short, but Bowman was unable to make a clean throw, putting runners on the corners with just one out. Carter Plunkett lofted a deep fly ball to right, scoring Carson McCusker with a sacrifice fly.
In the top of the third, McRae retired the first two batters, but allowed a single through the middle to Will Salva. Sam Watson lined a two-out double into the gap, scoring Salva who just slid in ahead of the Ingram tag for a 2-0 lead. A wild set of circumstances led to the Maroons third run in the bottom of the fourth. McRae allowed a lead-off double to Gavin Kandrick, who moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt. McRae issued back-to-back walks with one out, forcing a move to the bullpen. Jonah Offman entered, striking out the next batter, Matt Wojciechowski, bringing up Plunkett with two outs. Trying a pick-off attempt to third base, Offman was called for a balk, allowing Kandrick to score. The junior right-hander struck Plunkett out moments later.
The Blue Jays got that run right back in the bottom of the inning, as a two-out single from King put the Blue Jays in business. With King off and running on a 3-2 pitch, Sacks drilled a double off the right field wall to score King.
After Offman mowed through the Maroons in the top half, the Blue Jays tacked on another in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ainsworth hit a lead-off double down the left field line, forcing starting pitcher Evan Parks from the game. Nick Li sacrificed Ainsworth to third and the senior came around to score on an RBI bounce out from Mike Eberle.
Offman did everything asked of him, striking out 10 in five scoreless innings of relief to hold the deficit at 3-2 before giving way to Jaspar Carmichael in the ninth.
