How it Happened
The Blue Jays picked up their fourth-straight victory on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Stevens Ducks by a final score of 7-0. Freshman
Peter Schaefer earned his second career win, pitching five innings, allowing just two hits and striking out three. Junior reliever
Jonah Offman was even better, striking out nine in four innings, allowing just one hit to combine with Schaefer on the first shutout of the season for JHU.Â
The Blue Jay offense did their part, racking up five extra-base hits in the win.
Mike Eberle,
Matthew Ritchie and
James Ingram each had multi-hit games for the Jays.Â
The Hopkins offense got on the board in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs, Ritchie skied a ball high in the air, staying up in the wind on a breezy day in Baltimore, and falling in for a hit.
Chris Festa proceeded to drive a ball into the gap, bouncing over the wall for an RBI ground-rule double.Â
JHU put up a crooked number in the fifth, scoring three runs to extend the lead to 4-0.
Dillon Bowman led the inning off with a hit-by-pitch. After a diving catch in left robbed Eberle of a hit, Ritchie drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one away. Festa flied out to center, but the Blue Jays went to work with two outs.
AJ King singled through the left side, loading up the bases for
Austin Sacks. Sacks roped a ball into right field, scoring Bowman and Ritchie to make it a 3-0 lead. Ingram flared a single into left and King came around to score and the Jays led 4-0 after five.Â
In the sixth, Eberle hit another liner, this one into the gap in left-center for a two-out double. Ritchie poked one into right, scoring the senior captain for a 5-0 lead.Â
As Offman continued to mow down Duck hitters, the Blue Jay offense tacked on two more insurance runs in the eighth. Bowman drew a one-out walk, coming around to score on Eberle's third extra-base hit of the game, this one a triple. Ritchie hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Eberle to give the Blue Jays a 7-0 lead.Â
