How it Happened
The Blue Jays scored a season-high 14 runs, their fourth game this season with at least 10 runs, in a Monday evening victory over Messiah. Junior
Matthew Ritchie hit a grand-slam and added another two-run single to give him six RBI's on the day to lead the offense.Â
With a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Blue Jays began to add some insurance. Ben Writer retired the first batter of the inning, but
Mark Lopez responded with a one-out single. Lopez stole second before
Mike Ainsworth drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Messiah went to the bullpen, bringing in the lefty Cameron Spangler to face
Adam Kohl. Kohl ripped a double to left field, scoring Lopez and putting runners in scoring position for the top of the order. With the infield in,
Mike Eberle lined an RBI single into short left-center field, advancing to second on the throw to give JHU a 5-2 lead. Ritchie flared a single into a similar spot, scoring two runs to extend the lead to 7-2.Â
The offense poured it on in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five more runs.
Austin Sacks led off the inning with a single. With
James Ingram retired, Lopez walked to put runners on first and second with one away.
Jared deFaria pinch-hit for Ainsworth, ripping a double down the left field line to score Sacks. Kohl hit a bouncer to short with the infield in and Lopez was thrown out trying to score for the second out. Eberle drew a walk to load the bases for Ritchie and the junior went down to get a low and inside pitch, hammering it just over the wall in left for a grand slam, his fourth home run of the season.Â
Messiah started the scoring in the contest as Chris LaRose hit a solo shot to right in the second inning.
Chris Festa responded in the bottom of the third with a two-run shot, his fourth of the season, giving the Jays a 2-1 lead before LaRose added another RBI to the tally with a single in the fourth, tying the game at 2-2.Â
With a slew of pinch hitters entering the game, the Blue Jays added two more in the bottom of the eighth, solidifying a 10-run victory.
Bradley Martin and
Robby Faris both drove in runs with RBI singles in the eighth.Â
