Zimmerman Elected to IMLCA Hall of Fame

Former Blue Jay Coach Led JHU to Three NCAA Championships

BALTIMORE, MD – Don Zimmerman, who served as the men's lacrosse coach at Johns Hopkins from 1984-90 before moving on to a highly-successful 23-year run at UMBC, has been elected to the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IMLCA) Hall of Fame it was recently announced.

The scheduled venue and date for the 2020 IMLCA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony have yet to be finalized due to the current limitations in place for COVID-19. Event details and further updates will be announced at a later date.

Zimmerman is the sixth former Blue Jay head coach to be elected to the IMLCA's Hall of Fame as he joins Bob Scott (2015), Henry Ciccarone (2016), Howdy Myers (2016), Tony Seaman (2016) and William Schmeisser (2019) in receiving the IMLCA's highest honor.  In addition to the six, former Blue Jay players who have been elected after distinguished coaching careers at other schools include Jim "Ace" Adams (2015), Jerry Schmidt (2016), Willie Scroggs (2016) and Dick Watts (2019).
One of the most successful coaches in the storied history of the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse program, Zimmerman guided the Blue Jays to a seven-year run that ranks among the best in school history.

Leading the Blue Jays for seven years, Zimmerman compiled a remarkable 73-15 (.830) record, won three national championships (1984, 1985, 1987) and guided the Blue Jays to the NCAA Tournament in each of his seven seasons.  JHU also advanced to the national championship game in 1989 and Zimmerman was the first head coach in college lacrosse history to win an NCAA title in his first season.  JHU was nearly unbeatable at Homewood Field during his reign as the Blue Jays compiled a remarkable 40-7 (.851) record in the home whites under his guidance.

In addition to the national titles and NCAA Tournament appearances the Blue Jays compiled under his direction, the team also collected numerous individual awards during Zimmerman's tenure.

Johns Hopkins players compiled 21 First Team All-America honors, 47 overall All-America nods, two National Player of the Year, two Midfielder of the Year, three Defenseman of the Year and four Goalie of the Year awards under Zimmerman.

Zimmerman went on to lead the UMBC men's lacrosse program from 1994-2016 and compiled a 164-156 record with the Retrievers.  He led UMBC to six appearances in the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the quarterfinals in 2007, and 25 of his players garnered All-America honors.

Zimmerman graduated from Johns Hopkins in 1976.  He earned Honorable Mention All-America honors as a midfielder as a junior and helped Johns Hopkins to the NCAA Semifinals as a senior.
