Bucknell Defeats Johns Hopkins, 18-9

The Basics

• The Short Story: Bucknell used a strong first half to defeat the host Johns Hopkins water polo team, 18-9, on Sunday afternoon in Mid-Atlantic Water Polo Conference action.
 
How it Happened
• The Bison scored the game's first seven goals in a run that spanned 11 minutes. Sophomore Paul Gensbigler ended the Bucknell run and got Hopkins on the board with 4:41 to play in the second. The Bison answered with a pair of goals to push out to a 9-1 lead.
• Senior Emerson Sullivan scored a man-up goal with 24 ticks on the clock, to cut the deficit to seven but a late goal by Andu Vlasceanu sent Bucknell into the half with a 10-2 lead.
• Vlasceanu then opened the third-quarter scoring with his third goal just 47 seconds in. Senior Jayden Kunwar and Sullivan answered with back-to-back goals just 39 seconds apart to make it an 11-4 game.
• Jack Lewis and Vlasceanu responded with two goals for the Bison to push their lead to nine with 5:03 to play in the quarter. Junior Kamran Eslami scored a pair of man-up goals to cut the lead to 13-6. Bucknell answered with a 3-1 run, which included a third goal from Eslami, to take a 16-7 lead into the fourth. In the final eight minutes, Lewis sandwiched a pair of goals around two from freshman Ian Raley to account for the 18-9 final.
 
What it Means
• Hopkins slips to 24-50 all-time against Bucknell with the Bison winning their ninth straight in the series.
 
Inside the Box Score
• Eslami led the Blue Jays with his first career hat trick and a career-high three points. Raley matched his high with two goals. Gensbigler had a career-best two assists and three points, while junior Chris Freese tied his high with three helpers.
• Sullivan and senior Jake Pearson had four steals apiece. Sullivan also drew three ejections, scored two goals and had two blocks.
 
Up Next
• Hopkins will travel to Connecticut College for the CWPA Division III Eastern Championship October 23-24.
