How it Happened
1st Set
• Hopkins used a 10-2 run early on in the first set to really crack it open early before throttling the Shorewomen 25-7 .
• After a
Danielle Norman kill gave service to the Blue Jays and
Natalie Aston, Johns Hopkins took 10 of the next 12 points early in the match. During the run, Aston had an ace,
Sarah Khan had an ace and four Blue Jays registered kills as Hopkins took a 12-4 lead.
• The Shorewomen made it 12-6 with a kill from Angelina Schaber and an ace from Lauren Zedlar, but they would score just once more over the duration of the first set.
• Leading 12-6, Hopkins took off on a 10-0 run, getting contributions from all over.
Sydney Portale added a kill to make it 13-6, giving
Roxy Karrer the serve. Karrer had an ace and a kill, Aston called her own number three times and
Lauren Anthony and
Elayna Williams each had a kill to make it 22-6. Another Anthony kill made it 23-7 before
Evelyn Batista ended the set with a pair of aces.
2nd Set
• The Jays played a mostly new crew for the second set, getting a longer battle from the Shorewomen before a 25-21 set victory.
• An attack error put the Blue Jays behind 7-3 early before they began to chip away. Karrer mixed in an ace among a trio of Washington College errors to tie things up at 7-7.
• Two more attack errors put the Jays ahead 9-7, but the Shorewomen ripped off a quick 3-0 run to retake the lead.
Brooklyn Pater scored the next three points for Hopkins, getting a kill and two aces to put JHU up 12-10.
• The back-and-forth continued as Norman picked up a kill to tie the contest back up at 14-14. Norman fired an ace and
Virag Murphy picked up a kill and Hopkins was back up by two, but Washington College took the next two points and it was once again tied.
• Karrer broke the tie with a kill for Hopkins and the Blue Jays never gave the lead back. A pair of attack errors gave Hopkins a 19-16 lead. Sylvia Johnson's kill for Washington College cut it to 21-20, but Pater and Murphy went back-to-back to make it 23-20. Norman added another kill to extend the lead to 24-21 before
Annelisa O'Neal ended the set with an ace.
3rd Set
• Hopkins jumped ahead quickly in set number three, doing its best to make quick work of the Shorewomen and make history.
• Norman and
Pamela Chiakpo had kills right off the bat as Hopkins took a quick 4-0 lead. A collection of Shorewomen errors put the Blue Jays ahead 8-4.
•
Chidinma Onukwugha scored the next three points for Hopkins, picking up a kill and a pair of aces to give JHU an 11-4 lead.
• Chiakpo got back in the mix, adding a pair of kills to put the Jays ahead 15-9. The Shorewomen cut it back down to 15-11, but Hopkins took the next four points, getting a kill from Onukwugha and an ace from Batista.
•
Adalee Lynch picked up a kill to inch the Blue Jays closer to history and after a pair of attack errors from Washington College, it was Norman who finished the job and immortalized the Blue Jays with a 61st consecutive victory, the most in Division III history.
