he Short Story:Â The 14
th-ranked Johns Hopkins men's basketball team outscored St. Mary's 43-23 after halftime to fuel a 75-53 victory in the Pride of Maryland Classic at Stevenson University Saturday evening.
Â
How it Happened
Leading 32-30, the Blue Jays used a 14-5 run to open the second half to stretch the two-point lead to 11 (46-35) with 15:15 remaining. A
Carson James three-pointer jump-started the spree for the Blue Jays, who also got threes from
Tom Quarry and
Conner Delaney during the run.
Â
While the Blue Jay offense was getting going early in the second half, the Hopkins defense was doing its part at the other end. After an Isaiah Eggleston dunk with 17:09 on the second-half clock, the Seahawks managed just one free throw over the next 5:36. By the time Jordan Goodwin hit a jumper with 11:33 remaining, the Blue Jays had pushed the lead to 16 (51-35) and St. Mary's was never closer than 14 in the final 13 minutes of the game.
Â
The Blue Jays slowly extended the lead throughout the second half and took their first 20-point lead of the game on a
Lincoln Yeutter triple with 6:55 remaining. Â Â Hopkins led by as many as 25 after a
Diego Thompson three-pointer with just over two minutes remaining before locking down the 21-point win.
Â
An evenly-played first half saw the Blue Jays jump out to a quick 10-2 lead on the strength of five early points by James. The lead was up to nine (16-7) after a pair of Delaney free throwns, but St. Mary's answered with a 10-3 spurt that Olumide Lewis capped with one of his three, three-pointers in the game.
Â
A Goodwin jumper gave St. Mary's a 22-21 lead and the Seahawks enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 30-27 on a Goodwin triple with 2:20 remaining in the first half. Delaney answer with a three of his own just 31 seconds later and
Ethan Bartlett gave the Blue Jays the 32-30 lead they carried into the half with a pair of free throws 89 seconds before halftime. As it turned out, those final five points were a springboard to the 14-5 run the Blue Jays opened the second half with that gave them a double-digit lead they would never relinquish.
