The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team beat Cleveland State and UC San Diego on day one of the Elite Invitational at Ohio State Saturday.

How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the day with a tough 14-13 loss to the Air Force Academy. Sophomore
William Hu won his three bouts, including the clinching victory, to lead the Sabre squad to a 5-4 win. Sophomore
Gabe Insler also won his three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win. In the Foil (2-7), freshmen
Alan Zheng and
Alex Paek each earned one win.
• JHU then rebounded with a 17-10 win over Cleveland State. Senior
Eryk Kokosinski and junior
David DeScherer each earned three wins to lead the Sabre squad to an 8-1 win. Insler and freshman
Ethan Kim each won three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 6-3 win. In the Foil (3-6), Paek, Zheng and senior
Noah Park won one bout each for the Blue Jays.
• Hopkins closed out the day with a 14-13 win over UC San Diego with the Sabre and Epee squads picking up wins. Hu again won all three of his bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 6-3 win. Kim, Insler and sophomore
Julius Dunn won two bouts each to lead the Epee squad in a 6-3 win. And in the Foil (2-7), Paek and Park won one bout each.

What it Means
• Hopkins improves to 11-1 all-time against Cleveland State in the first meeting between the Blue Jays and the Vikings since 2010.
• Kokosinski moved into a tie for 25
th place in school history with 139 career Sabre wins.
