Johns Hopkins Defeats Denison at Elite Invitational

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins women's fencing team went 1-3 on the first day of the 2021 Elite Invitational with wins over UC San Diego and Denison.
 
How it Happened
• Hopkins opened the day with a close loss to the Air Force Academy with the Blue Jays earning a win in the Foil (9-0). Junior Alex McDonald, senior Miya Herman and sophomore Czarina Alfonso led the Foil squad to a shutout win with three wins each. Sophomore Jenny Song and senior Cherlin Zhu earned one win each for the Epee squad (2-7). In the Epee (1-8), sophomore Diya Kulkarni picked up the lone Blue Jays' win.
• JHU then fell to Northwestern while the Epee squad picked up an 8-1 win. Kulkarni and junior Alex Szewc won two bouts each to lead the Epee squad to the win. Song earned the Blue Jays' only win in the Sabre. And in the Foil (3-6), McDonald, Alfonso and Herman each earned a win.
• The Blue Jays then lost to the Tritons but got wins for the Foil (5-4) and Epee (5-4) squads. Herman led the Foil squad with two wins, including the clinching victory. Kulkarni and freshman Ameera Ebrahim won two bouts each for the Epee squad, with Ebrahim securing the win. Song won two of her three bouts to lead the Sabre squad (3-6).
• Hopkins closed out the day with a win over Denison and a sweep of the weapons. Song again led the Sabre squad, winning all three of her bouts in a 6-3 win for the Blue Jays. McDonald, Alfonso and Herman combined for nine wins for the Foil squad. And in the Epee, freshman Katelyn McShine won her three bouts to lead the squad to a 6-3 win.
 
What it Means
• Today's match versus Denison was the first-ever between the Blue Jays and the Big Red.
• Zhu's second win of the day was the 100th of her career. McDonlad needs just five wins to join her in the 100-win club.
• Herman moved into 10th place in school history with 147 career Foil wins.
