The Short Story:Â The fourth-ranked Northwestern Wildcats used a 7-1 run early in the second half to take control of the game en route to an 18-9 win over host Johns Hopkins on a rain-soaked Homewood Field Sunday afternoon.
Â
How it Happened
• Leading by three at the half, Northwestern got two quick goals from Izzy Scane and Lindsey McKone to make it a 10-5 lead just 81 seconds in. Hopkins answered at the 25:23-mark, capitalizing off a NU turnover on the other end. After a quick clear, senior
Aurora Cordingley found sophomore
Maeve Barker open on the crease, who faked high and then went low on Madison Doucette.
• Lauren Gilbert pushed the lead back to five and sparked a five-goal run for the Wildcats when she dodged through the fan, dropped her stick and scored on a low shot. Scane followed with three straight goals and Elle Hansen capped the spurt with a one-timer to stake Northwestern to a 15-6 lead with 16:03 to play.
• Cordingley ended the run with her first of the afternoon at 12:47 as the Blue Jays took advantage of a failed NU clear. Graduate student
Maggie Schneidereith took the ball away from the defense and fed a pass to Cordingley, who hitched and then scored from the doorstep. Gilbert answered for Northwestern three minutes later, but Hopkins came right back. Just 61 seconds after Gilbert's score, Schneidereith found a cutting Barker, who scored on the run from the right alley.
• Scane and Sammy Mueller then scored back-to-back goals in a 64-second span to put Northwestern up 18-8 with 3:30 to play. Cordingley had the final say of the game, splitting a double team and scoring from in-tight with just 18.4 seconds left.
• Scane opened the scoring with a free position goal just 35 seconds into the game, but Schneidereith responded with a quick-stick score off a
Mackenzie Heldberg feed at 28:50. Back-to-back goals by Hansen and Mueller put the Wildcats up 3-1 before another Schneidereith goal, this one in transition, cut the deficit to one with 15:18 to go in the half.
• NU got a pair of goals in a span of only 15 seconds to quickly push the lead to three. A
Trinity McPherson takeaway on defense led to a Schneidereith goal on the offense and it was back to a two-goal game with 10:37 left. Gilbert then converted a free position shot, followed by another Scane goal and the 'Cats led 7-3 with just over two minutes to play.
• The scoring wasn't done however as the teams combined for three goals in the final 63 seconds. Heldberg found Schneidereith in the slot for the one-timer, but Gilbert answered on the other end with a loose ball pickup and score. But Helberg got one more for the Blue Jays, dodging from behind and slipping a shot between the left post and Doucette with 28.3 ticks on the clock to make it an 8-5 game at the break.
