Blue Jays Split Series With Red Devils

The Jays Picked Up Their First Win Of The Season In Game One

GAME ONE
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 9, Dickinson - 5
• Records: JHU (1-2) • DC (2-1)
• Pitching Decision: W – Kieren Collins (1-0)  • L – Matt Spind (0-1)
• The Short Story: Leading 3-1, the Blue Jays plated six runs in the top of sixth inning, picking up their first win of the 2021 season, 9-5.

How it Happened
• Nearly mirroring Sunday's opener, the Blue Jays pushed a run across the board to take a 1-0 lead in the first. Dai Dai Otaka picked up his first hit as a Blue Jay, putting the leadoff runner on. Matthew Ritchie singled down the line in right, allowing Otaka to advance to third. After a strikeout and a passed ball, Jared deFaria walked to load the bases. With two away, Austin Sacks hit a grounder, reaching on a fielder's choice, scoring Otaka to put JHU on top.
• In the bottom of the second, Brendan Pell singled to start the inning. Hopkins starter Jack McRae retired the next two batters, but Pell stole second, putting a runner in scoring position with two away. Lukas Atsalis found the gap in right-center, scoring Pell with an RBI triple to tie things up at 1-1.
• The Jays wasted no time answering, plating two runs in the top of the third despite Dickinson starter Matt Spind retiring the first two hitters. deFaria began the two-out rally with his second walk of the contest. Dillon Bowman singled, putting two on with two away. Sacks picked up another RBI, doubling down the left-field line. Spind unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Bowman to come home to score giving JHU a 3-1 lead.
• The scoring resumed in the sixth when the Blue Jays blew it open with a six-run inning. With one on and one out, Mark Lopez and Otaka hit back-to-back infield singles, loading the bases. Ritchie singled to left, scoring AJ King, but Lopez was thrown out trying to score. Now with two away, Isaiah Winikur reached base on an error by shortstop Tom Gannaway, scoring Otaka. The two-out onslaught continued as deFaria and Bowman both singled, scoring three more for JHU. James Ingram added a final RBI single to put the Blue Jays up 9-1.
• Tyler Scaff hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth and the Red Devils added three more in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and an error, cutting the deficit to 9-5.
• Brian Linton worked the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out six, including the side in the bottom of the ninth.

 Inside the Box Score
• The four Blue Jay pitchers combined to allow just seven hits and strike out 15 batters, led by the six from Linton. McRae whiffed four in his 2.1 innings on the bump.
• deFaria and Sacks both drove in a pair of runs for JHU. Sacks went 2-5 with the lone extra-base hit for JHU while deFaria picked up a pair of hits and drew two walks.
• Six Blue Jays had multi-hit efforts. Otaka, Ritchie, Bowman and Ingram joined deFaria and Sacks, combining for 12 of the 13 JHU hits.
• Winikur, deFaria and Lopez all stole bases for JHU in Game One.

GAME TWO
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 1, Dickinson - 3
• Records: JHU (1-3) • DC (3-1)
• Pitching Decision: W – Ethan Hamilton (2-0) • L – Peter Schaefer (0-2) • Save – Beau Dana (2)
• The Short Story: Despite another quick start, Hamilton and Dana held the Blue Jay offense at bay in a 3-1 win for the Red Devils.

How it Happened
• For the third time in four games, Johns Hopkins scored in the top of the first inning. Getting his first start of the year, Nick Li singled to center field and stole second. Matt Ritchie doubled into right-center, scoring Li and giving the Jays another 1-0 lead.
• Peter Schaefer was phenomenal early on, striking out four in the first two innings of the contest. The sophomore found himself in a jam in the third, allowing a pair of two-out singles and a walk, but he induced a fly out to get out unscathed.
• The Red Devils finally got to Schaefer in the bottom of the sixth. Tom Gannaway opened up the inning with a single to left. After a sacrifice bunt, Brendan Pell singled to score Gannaway and tie the game at 1-1. Pell stole second and scored on an RBI triple off the bat of Derek Smith, putting Dickinson ahead 2-1. Ben Keever entered the game for Hopkins, retiring the next batter, but allowed Smith to score on an RBI single from Colin Jones.
• Beau Dana entered in the top of the seventh with a 3-1 lead and proceeded to retire all nine batters he faced, earning the save for the Red Devils.

 Inside the Box Score
