Lopez & Ingram's Big Flys Lead Blue Jays To DH Sweep Of Shoremen

GAME ONE
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 6, Washington College - 3
• Records: JHU (4-3) • WC (11-4, 5-2)
• Pitching Decision: W: Peter Schaefer (1-2) • L – Mike Smith (1-3) • Save – Brian Linton (1)
• The Short Story: Mark Lopez's grand slam in a five-run second inning propelled Johns Hopkins to their third straight victory and fourth in five games.

How it Happened
• Sophomore Peter Schaefer allowed a leadoff double on the first pitch of the contest to Max Ruvo, but struck out Jack Kingman and Joe Curtin with Ruvo on third to escape the first inning.
 • The second inning was a big one for the Blue Jays as AJ King started the fun with a one-out single to center. It was King's fifth straight at-bat with a hit. The junior backstop moved to second as James Ingram laid down a beautiful bunt single. Mike Smith issued a walk to Austin Sacks, loading the bases. Mike Ainsworth grounded sharply into the hole where CJ Gillmer was able to knock it down, but Ainsworth reached safely with an RBI single, scoring King. Mark Lopez took a first pitch fastball deep to left, crushing a grand slam to put the Jays on top 5-0 in a hurry.
 • The Blue Jays put another one on the board in the sixth inning, extending the lead to 6-0. Isaiah Winikur drew a two-out walk, advancing to third on a line drive base knock to left off the bat of Jared deFaria. King roped another ball into center, scoring Winikur with his seventh straight at-bat with a hit.
• The Shoremen threatened in the top of the sixth inning, finally getting to Schaefer. Chris Baker led the inning off with a single to left field, advancing to second on a Jack Kingman walk. That brought Jonah Offman out of the bullpen for JHU. Offman induced a fielder's choice, getting the runner at second. With runners on first and third, the senior right-hander got Danny Sheeler to ground into a double play, ending the inning.
• Washington College made things interesting in an eventful seventh inning for the Blue Jay bullpen. After inducing a Gillmer ground out, Offman allowed a double into the left center gap off the bat of Dylan Nepert. Nepert moved up 90 feet after a wild pitch from Offman. The senior righty struck Ryan Colbert out swinging, but allowed an RBI single up the middle to Ben Ruvo. Ruvo stole second, scoring when his brother Max ripped a double to right-center. That spelled the end of the day for Offman, bringing in lefty Carson McKoon to face Baker. The move was unsuccessful as Baker hit the third double of the inning, scoring Ruvo to cut the deficit to 6-3. Brian Linton came on for Hopkins, hitting a batter, but ultimately getting a ground out to sneak out of the inning.
• Linton allowed a pair of two-out singles, but Kingman flew out to Ingram in left-center, ending the contest and giving Hopkins their third straight win.

 Inside the Box Score
• Schaefer picks up his first win of the season, going five plus, striking out six and allowing no runs. Schaefer has struck out at least five in all four of his starts in 2021.
• The second-inning grand slam is the eighth home run of Lopez's career. There have been runners on base for five of Lopez's eight career bombs, though this is the first grand slam of his career.
• Linton pitched the final 2.1 innings for the Blue Jays, allowing just two hits and picking up his eighth strikeout of the season to earn a save.
• With a 3-3 day, King extended his streak to seven at-bats in a row with a base hit. A base on balls in his final at bat of the day made it 8 straight at-bats reaching base for the junior catcher.
• Despite having his hitting streak come to an end, Matthew Ritchie made it 10 straight games reaching base and 21 of 22 contests dating back to the 2019 College World Series.

GAME TWO
• Score: Johns Hopkins - 8, Washington College - 2
• Records: JHU (5-3) • WC (11-5, 5-3)
• Pitching Decision: W: Jack McRae (1-0) • L: Ethan Kile (0-1) • Save: Ben Keever (1)
• The Short Story: Knotted at 2-2, James Ingram hit a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth inning, giving JHU the lead before the Jays broke it open late.

How it Happened
• Kieren Collins opened the game by hitting Max Ruvo with the first pitch. Ruvo advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt, moved up to third on a ground out, and then scored on an RBI ground out from Jack Kingman, putting Washington College on top 1-0.
• The Blue Jays tied it up in the bottom half of the inning after loading up the bases against starter Jonah Frankel. With one out, Matthew Ritchie doubled to left center. Isaiah Winikur walked and Jared deFaria was hit by a pitch, bringing up AJ King. King lined one to right field, bringing in Ritchie with a sacrifice fly.
• Both pitchers settled in before Hopkins took the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Austin Sacks led off the inning with a double into the gap in left-center. After retiring the next two batters, Frankel issued a walk to Jack Walters. Mike Ainsworth entered the game, pinch-hitting for Nick Li, and came up big with an RBI single through the right side, scoring Sacks to put JHU on top, 2-1.
• The Shoremen answered back quickly against Collins in the fifth. After striking out Ryan Colbert, Collins allowed a single to Ben Ruvo. His brother Max advanced him to second with a single, putting two on with one away. Collins spiked a pitch, advancing both runners into scoring position. Chris Baker grounded out to short, scoring Ruvo to tie the contest at 2-2.
• Ingram struck in the bottom of the sixth with a one-out solo shot to right center, just clearing the wall past the outstretched arm of Baker.
• Disaster struck with two away in the seventh for the Shoremen. deFaria hit a routine pop-up to left, but Ruvo couldn't hold onto it, extending the inning. King singled to score deFaria, picking up his second RBI of the contest. King moved up on a wild pitch, scoring on a Sacks RBI single through the hole on the left side.
• Now leading 5-2, Hopkins tacked on three more in the bottom of the eighth. Winikur and deFaria picked up RBI singles while Ingram drove in another by drawing a bases loaded hit-by-pitch.
