Blue Jays Drop Heart-Breaker to Top-Ranked Maryland, 14-13

Terps Score Final Three Goals in Last Two Minutes

BALTIMORE, MD – The top-ranked Maryland men's lacrosse team scored the last three goals of the game – all of which came in the final two minutes – to rally past host Johns Hopkins for a 14-13 victory at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon.  The 121st edition of college lacrosse's greatest rivalry turned into an instant classic and near shocking upset after Maryland had jumped to a big early lead, only to have the Blue Jays fight back and take a late two-goal lead before falling.

The Blue Jays (2-8, 2-8 B1G) trailed by five on two occasions at 5-0 and 9-4, but used a stunning 9-2 run that bridged the second and fourth quarters to grab a late 13-11 lead.

Down 11-10 entering the fourth quarter, Johns Hopkins scored the first three goals of the final period to grab the 13-11 lead.  A pair of extra-man strikes from freshman Johnathan Peshko were sandwiched around a Connor DeSimone strike in the first 10 minutes of the period to stake the Blue Jays to the two-goal lead with just over five minutes remaining.

That lead held for just over three minutes before the Terps strung together the game-ending three-goal run that proved to the difference.

Senior Logan Wisnauskas ignited the spree when he scored with one second remaining on the shot clock and 1:48 on the game clock with a flip high into the net as he was falling to the ground.  It then took just 12 seconds for the Terps to draw even as senior Jared Bernhardt gained possession of the ensuing faceoff near midfield and streaked into the offensive zone and blew a low shot into the corner on the run.

Maryland (10-0, 10-0 B1G) won the following faceoff and worked out of a timeout for a good look, which they found with 18.5 seconds remaining when Bernhardt found Wisnauskas on the wing and he went high to the far post for what proved to the game-winner.

A late-game rally didn't look like it would be necessary as the Terps needed just 10:33 to grab a 5-0 lead that was jump-started by back-to-back goals from Bernhardt in a 10-second span less than two minutes into the game.

Wisnauskas and Bubba Fairman goals in a 51-second span later in the quarter capped the run, which finally ended with a Cole Williams goal for the Blue Jays with just seconds remaining in the first period.

Johns Hopkins was within 6-4 after Joey Epstein and Tyler Dunn bookended another Bernhardt tally midway through the second quarter, but another Wisnauskas goal and tallies from Griffin Brown and Anthony DeMaio put the momentum back with guys in red with less than four minutes remaining before halftime.

The 9-4 lead for Maryland didn't make it to halftime as Garrett Degnon blew home a 12-yarder and Jacob Angelus scored from the doorstep in the final 39 seconds of the second quarter to make it 9-6 at the half.

After being outscored by Maryland 8-0 in the third quarter of their last meeting, the first goal of the second half figured to be crucial and it took just 55 seconds for the Blue Jays to pull within two as DeSimone snuck one inside the near post after dodging from behind the goal.

It took less than a minute midway through the period for the Blue Jays to go from down two to even as Degnon fired one home from the wing off a feed from Wililams and Baskin got his left-hand free as he worked to the middle of the field just 54 seconds later to force the first of three ties in the final 23 minutes.

Maryland carried the 11-10 lead into the fourth quarter as Fairman and Daniel Maltz  both scored in the final 4:07 of the third with the Blue Jays managing Degnon's career-high-tying third of the game during that time to account for the one-goal Terp lead entering the final period.

The Blue Jays had the 13-11 lead ten minutes after the final quarter started courtesy of the two extra-man strikes from Peshko and the DeSimone low-to-high rip from the wing, but in a game of runs it was Maryland that had the final surge to pull out the one-goal victory.

Johns Hopkins got three goals from both DeSimone and Degnon, one goal and three assists from Epstein and one goal and two assists from Williams, while Peshko had the first multi-goal game of his career.

The story for the Blue Jays came up the middle of the field as junior Matt Narewski won 15-of-23 faceoffs and had 10 ground balls, while sophomore Tim Marcille made his first career start in goal and came up with 11 saves to keep the Blue Jays in the game after falling behind early.

Bernhardt and Wisnauskas both had four goals and one assist to lead the way for the Terrapins, who got 10 saves in goal from Logan McNaney and a 13-of-29 performance from faceoff specialist Luke Weiman.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, May 1 when the Blue Jays play at Penn State or Ohio State in the Big Ten Quarterfinals.  The final seedings for the tournament will not be available until after the Rutgers-Michigan game on Sunday, April 25.

Notes:  Williams reached the 150-point mark with his one goal and two assists today.  The Blue Jays were 2-for-4 on extra-man and are now 13-of-26 (.500) on the year  - JHU has finished a season at 50 percent or better on extra-man just twice since 1975 (2014, 2017)
